2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to affirm their affection for the City of | ||||||
4 | Chicago, a world-renowned, international travel destination | ||||||
5 | for millions; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The name "Chicago" is forever linked with | ||||||
7 | world-famous sports teams and international superstars in the | ||||||
8 | sports of baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and soccer; | ||||||
9 | and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Chicago is the transportation center of North | ||||||
11 | America, with unique outreach capabilities for its people, | ||||||
12 | employers, manufacturers, and distributors, by road, rail, | ||||||
13 | water, and air; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Chicago's geography is unique; it is the largest | ||||||
15 | city in the world with a panorama of fresh water, allowing its | ||||||
16 | residents to partake in countless recreational activities | ||||||
17 | along the lakefront; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Chicago's downtown has the largest cluster of | ||||||
19 | super-tall buildings in the Western Hemisphere, each one taller | ||||||
20 | than 1,000 feet; and

1 | WHEREAS, Chicago's culture is highly oriented towards | ||||||
2 | neighborhoods, churches, parishes, and geographical settings; | ||||||
3 | it is an example of the kind of metropolitan city that young | ||||||
4 | adults are flocking to and learning how to live in when they | ||||||
5 | are undergoing higher education and in their early professional | ||||||
6 | years afterwards; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Chicago has many colleges and universities; the | ||||||
8 | City Colleges of Chicago, Chicago's largest institution of | ||||||
9 | higher education by headcount, currently has 120,000 students; | ||||||
10 | tens of thousands of additional students attend other public | ||||||
11 | and private colleges and universities in and around the city; | ||||||
12 | and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The foremost U.S. university in connection with | ||||||
14 | the Nobel Prize is the University of Chicago, with 87 scholars | ||||||
15 | who are affiliated with the university winning this supreme | ||||||
16 | career award; only one other university in the world, Cambridge | ||||||
17 | University in England, surpasses the University of Chicago; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Chicago area schools such as Northwestern | ||||||
19 | University, the University of Chicago, an internationally | ||||||
20 | recognized institution, and the University of Illinois, in | ||||||
21 | conjunction with other universities, are joining together to | ||||||
22 | create a network of technological incubation centers | ||||||
23 | throughout Chicago; these centers, when combined with the |

1 | expertise commanded by leaders at these institutions, will | ||||||
2 | create jobs and a bright future for the midwest; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Chicago is a world-class city that attracts the | ||||||
4 | best and brightest to work and live and it boasts a plethora of | ||||||
5 | sports, entertainment, and culture that compares to any city in | ||||||
6 | the world; therefore, be it

7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
8 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
9 | we affirm our affection for the City of Chicago; and be it | ||||||
10 | further
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel.
