Amends the Local Government Employees Political Rights Act. Provides that any law enforcement officer who is elected to the Illinois General Assembly and provides a written application shall be granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or her term of office. Provides that if that law enforcement officer desires to continue his or her employment during his or her term of office, the employer shall cooperate with the officer and adopt a mutually agreeable work schedule. Effective immediately.

1 | | AN ACT concerning local government.
|
2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political |
5 | | Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows: |
6 | | (50 ILCS 135/12) |
7 | | Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office. |
8 | | (a) A member of any fire department or fire protection |
9 | | district may: |
10 | | (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve |
11 | | in that public office if elected; |
12 | | (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that |
13 | | public office if appointed; and |
14 | | (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on |
15 | | duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters |
16 | | for the public office for which the member is a candidate.

17 | | (b) A firefighter who is elected to the Illinois General |
18 | | Assembly shall, upon written application to the employer, be |
19 | | granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or |
20 | | her term of office.

21 | | (c) A law enforcement officer, as defined in Section 2 of |
22 | | the Illinois Police Training Act, who is elected to the General |
23 | | Assembly shall, upon written application to his or her |
