Amends the Fire Protection District Act. Provides that the board of trustees of any fire protection district may, by ordinance, require the installation of an access or key box if: (1) a structure is protected by an automatic fire alarm or security system or access to or within the structure or area is unduly difficult because of secured openings; and (2) immediate access is necessary for life-saving purposes. Further provides that an ordinance enacted under this Section may specify the type or class of structure that must install an access or key box, but may not apply to single family residential structures. Effective immediately.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Fire Protection District Act is amended by |
5 | | adding Section 11j as follows: |
6 | | (70 ILCS 705/11j new) |
7 | | Sec. 11j. Installation of access or key boxes. The board of |
8 | | trustees of any fire protection district may, by ordinance, |
9 | | require the installation of an access or key box if: (1) a |
10 | | structure is protected by an automatic fire alarm or security |
11 | | system or access to or within the structure or area is unduly |
12 | | difficult because of secured openings; and (2) immediate access |
13 | | is necessary for life-saving purposes. "Access or key box" |
14 | | means a secure device with a lock operable only by a fire |
15 | | department master key, and containing building entry keys and |
16 | | other keys that may be required for access in an emergency. |
17 | | The access or key box shall be of an approved type listed |
18 | | in accordance with the most recently published version of the |
19 | | standard Underwriters Laboratories 1037 and shall contain keys |
20 | | to gain access as required by the fire chief of the fire |
21 | | protection district, or his or her designee. |
22 | | An ordinance enacted under this Section may specify |
23 | | particular classes or types of structures or occupancies that |
