SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Illinois State Senator Edward D. Maloney, a proud
3Chicago "South-Sider", was born in Evergreen Park; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney attended Lewis University and
5earned his bachelor's degree in political science; his passion
6for education led him to later earn his master's degree in
7education from Chicago State University; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney served as a teacher, guidance
9counselor, administrator, and coach at the Oak Lawn High
10School; he also served as a manager and professional developer
11for the Chicago Park District; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's passion for education
13exemplified itself through his position as Dean and Principal
14of Brother Rice High School in Chicago; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney began his career as a legislator
16when he served in the 87th General Assembly as a member of the
17Illinois House of Representatives from 1992 to 1993; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's desire to assist the citizens of
19Chicago's Southside led to his bid for election to the Illinois
20State Senate in 2002, where he has served the families of the

118th District; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's background in education
3prepared him for his role as Chairperson for the Senate Higher
4Education Committee, which he has chaired since 2005; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has brought real world and
6professional education experience to the Senate, advocating
7for innovative ways to assist students and make college more
8affordable through the Monetary Award Program; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney helped the cause of education by
10sponsoring legislative initiatives that expand student access
11to colleges and universities by lowering the age requirement
12for those taking the General Equivalency Test (GED) and
13allowing Illinois residents to rehabilitate their defaulted
14student loans; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has sought to reduce the sharp
16decline in the number of professional nurses across the State
17by proposing legislation that would provide scholarship
18incentives to attract more individuals to the profession; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has served on and led numerous
20other committees during his tenure in the Senate, including the
21Senate Committees on Labor (Vice Chairperson), Appropriations

1I, Appropriations II, Redistricting, Transportation, Consumer
2Protection, Deficit Reduction, Local Government, Labor and
3Commerce (Vice Chairperson), and Revenue; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has a strong record of protecting
5children by proposing harsher punishments for school employees
6who failed to disclose their sexually-based offenses, while
7also educating children about internet safety and the harmful
8effects of steroid abuse; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has sought to ensure the health of
10Illinois citizens by proposing and passing legislation
11increasing emergency resources for persons with disabilities
12and criminalizing fraudulent health insurance policies; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney has always been a champion of
14evaluating educational programs on their performance measures
15and seeking to better prepare educators for the struggles
16within the classroom through teacher-to-teacher mentoring
17programs; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney was named "Legislature of the
19Year" in 2008 by the Illinois State Crime Commission and the
20Associated Firefighters of Illinois; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney and his wife, Norine, currently

1live in Chicago, where he raised his 4 sons, Brian, Matthew,
2Daniel, and Martin; he has also been blessed with 10 amazing
3and energetic grandchildren; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Senator Maloney's retirement from the Illinois
5Senate will not only deeply affect the performance of the
6Senate Softball Team, but will more importantly affect everyone
7who serves here as we will lose his wisdom, humor, and deep
8dedication; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we thank Senator Edward
11D. Maloney for his years of service to the people of Illinois
12and honor him with this resolution; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to Senator Maloney as a symbol of our gratitude and
15with our best wishes for his future endeavors.
