2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
Norman E. Carroll of River Forest, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on July 6, 2012; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Norman Carroll was born on October 17, 1929, in | ||||||
6 | Chicago; his parents were Ralph and Edith (Fay) Carroll; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Norman Carroll earned his bachelor's degree in | ||||||
8 | economics from Loyola University in 1956; he subsequently | ||||||
9 | earned his master's degree in economics from DePaul University | ||||||
10 | in 1964, his doctoral degree in business and economics from the | ||||||
11 | Illinois Institute of Technology in 1971, and a second master's | ||||||
12 | degree in accounting from Dominican University in 1983; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Norman Carroll served in a number of essential | ||||||
14 | roles during his long career at Dominican University, including | ||||||
15 | provost and vice president of academic affairs, academic dean, | ||||||
16 | dean of the Graduate School of Business (now the Brennan School | ||||||
17 | of Business), chair of the university's economics department, | ||||||
18 | and professor of economics; after retiring from the post of | ||||||
19 | provost and vice president of academic affairs in 2007, he | ||||||
20 | rejoined the faculty as an esteemed university professor and | ||||||
21 | professor of economics in the Brennan School of Business, where | ||||||
22 | he taught until his passing; and

1 | WHEREAS, As the founding dean of Dominican's graduate | ||||||
2 | business school, Norman Carroll spearheaded an emphasis on | ||||||
3 | internationalization; under his guidance, the university | ||||||
4 | established executive MBA programs in Poland, the Czech | ||||||
5 | Republic, China, and India and launched the School of | ||||||
6 | Education, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the School | ||||||
7 | of Professional and Continuing Studies; during his tenure, the | ||||||
8 | university also initiated numerous partnerships and study | ||||||
9 | abroad programs and opened additional campus locations and | ||||||
10 | programs in online education; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Norman Carroll was preceded in death by his | ||||||
12 | parents and his brother, Ralph Carroll, Jr.; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Norman Carroll is survived by his loving wife of | ||||||
14 | 52 years, Ruth (Charlton); his children, Mark (Betsy), Becky | ||||||
15 | (John Guido), and John; his 7 grandchildren; his | ||||||
16 | great-granddaughter; and his brothers, William and Donald; | ||||||
17 | therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
20 | his family and friends, the passing of Norman E. Carroll; and | ||||||
21 | be it further
