2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Sue Ellen (Manis) Cox of Benton, who |
4 | | passed away on March 8, 2012; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, She was born the fifth child of Archie and Corda |
6 | | (Tweety) Manis on October 23, 1935; upon her mother's passing, |
7 | | she lived with her Uncle James "Smokey" and Aunt Ethel Hill of |
8 | | West Frankfort; she attended school at Edwards Grade School and |
9 | | graduated from FCHS in 1953; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, After graduation, she went to live with her sister |
11 | | in Anderson, Indiana; she met and married George Hoffman, and |
12 | | together they had 3 children; she later moved home to West |
13 | | Frankfort and, in 1965, married attorney Lloyd Donald Cox in |
14 | | Benton; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, She was as a receptionist for Dr. Richard Simpson; |
16 | | she later left to begin a job at The Daily American Newspaper |
17 | | in West Frankfort, where she was the Lifestyle Editor; she |
18 | | began a popular weekly column, "Week in Week Out" that depicted |
19 | | her humorous and insightful look into the life of a "real" |
20 | | single mother; she retired in the late 1990s from the newspaper |
21 | | and began working part-time as a secretary at Westminister |
22 | | Presbyterian Church in Benton, where she was also the organist |

1 | | and a member; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, She enjoyed golf, reading (which was her passion), |
3 | | working with her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, and playing the |
4 | | piano and organ; she adored being outside, working in her |
5 | | flowers and playing with her grandchildren; she also loved all |
6 | | St. Louis sports, high school and college basketball; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents; her |
8 | | sister, Arletta Sullivan; her brothers, Jack and George Manis; |
9 | | and her husband, Lloyd D. Cox; and

10 | | WHEREAS, Sue Ellen Cox is survived by her children, |
11 | | Jennifer Peebles and husband, Keil, Michael Hoffman and wife, |
12 | | Anita, Beth Ann Hoffman, and Justus Cox; her special friend, |
13 | | Judy; her stepsons, Courtney Cox and wife, Leslie and Kevin Cox |
14 | | and the late Caryl Cox; her grandchildren, Chesney Baltrusis |
15 | | and husband, Bart, Tyler Peebles and wife, Rachel, Grayson |
16 | | Peebles, Maria, Christian, and Nicholas Hoffman, Ben Cox and |
17 | | wife, Carrie, Nathaniel Cox, Eli Cox and wife, Lindsay, and Tim |
18 | | Cox; her great-grandchildren, Kiley, Korinn, and Korben Cox, |
19 | | and Jilianne and Crosby Cox; her sister and best friend, |
20 | | Shirley White; her brother, Charles Manis and wife, Mary; her |
21 | | sisters-in-law, Marilyn Glenn and Donna Manis; and several |
22 | | nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it
