|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Dr.
Edwin Joseph Carey, who passed away |
4 | | on October 9, 2011; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dr.
Edwin Carey was born and raised in Joliet; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Dr.
Edwin Carey served his country with pride and |
7 | | distinction as a member of the United States Army in the |
8 | | Pacific Theater during World War II; in 1949, he graduated from |
9 | | Northwestern University with a degree in chemical engineering; |
10 | | he began working for Johns Manville Steel Company that same |
11 | | year; during his stint at the steel company, he decided to |
12 | | enter medicine, following in the footsteps of his father and |
13 | | grandfather, who were both physicians; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Dr.
Edwin Carey graduated from the University of |
15 | | Illinois Medical School in Chicago in 1959; he completed his |
16 | | internship at Cook County Hospital in 1961; after starting his |
17 | | practice in general medicine in Sandwich, Dr. Carey began |
18 | | training to become a general surgeon and served a residency at |
19 | | Cook County Hospital from 1965 to 1970; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Dr.
Edwin Carey was a co-founder of the Fountain |
21 | | Medical Group in Sandwich; during his career, he trained |
|

|
1 | | emergency medical technicians in 15 surrounding rural |
2 | | communities, created a burn treatment center, and helped |
3 | | establish an intensive care unit at the hospital, which is now |
4 | | called Valley West Community Hospital; he served the Sandwich |
5 | | community faithfully until he closed his practice in July of |
6 | | 2006; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Dr.
Edwin Carey served as a clinical assistant |
8 | | professor in the department of surgery at Loyola University |
9 | | Stritch School of Medicine from 1971 to 1994; in 1975, he was |
10 | | appointed to serve as the institutional physician and medical |
11 | | director of the Sheridan Correctional Center in Sheridan, a |
12 | | position he held for 26 years; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, In October of 2006, Dr.
Edwin Carey was recognized |
14 | | by Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Rural Health |
15 | | Association as an Illinois' Rural Physician of Excellence in |
16 | | honor of his work in providing medical care for rural citizens |
17 | | and health care infrastructure in rural communities; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Dr.
Edwin Carey was preceded in death by his first |
19 | | wife, Joan; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, Dr.
Edwin Carey is survived by his wife, Betty |
21 | | Erickson; his sons, Edwin Jr., Andy, John, and Scott; his |
22 | | daughters, Susan Otterstrom, Candy, Carolyn Knoebel, and Jane |

1 | | Nasharr; his sister, Cheryl; his 16 grandchildren; his |
2 | | great-grandson; his stepdaughters, Krista Tetter and Karsta |
3 | | Erickson; and his step-granddaughter; therefore, be it
|
4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
5 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
6 | | his family and friends, the passing of Dr.
Edwin Joseph Carey; |
7 | | and be it further
|
8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
9 | | presented to the family of Dr.
Edwin Carey as an expression of |
10 | | our sympathy.
