SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Howard Kaplan, who passed away on June
419, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan was a native Chicagoan who grew up
6in a conservative Jewish working-class family in East Rogers
7Park; he met his future wife while he was a student at Sullivan
8High School and she was attending Senn High School; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan was employed as an attorney, a
10certified public accountant, and a real estate developer; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan was a business leader and a Jewish
12community activist who held important posts in local, national,
13and international Jewish and civic organizations for many
14decades; he served as chairman of the Board of Governors of
15Israel Bonds' Midwest office; he was a board member of the
16Israel Bonds national organization for more than 15 years; he
17served as the 1996 general campaign chairman for the Jewish
18United Fund; he was a past chairperson of the Jewish Community
19Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
20Chicago; he served as president of Hadassah Associates; he was
21a member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for
22Israel; he was also a past president of Northwest Suburban

1Jewish Congregation, a trustee of Hebrew University, and chair
2of the Cook County Crime Commission; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan is survived by his wife, Marlene;
4his children, Audra Kaplan Spellberg, Rhonda Katz, Bennett
5Kaplan, and Patrick Kaplan; his grandchildren, Emile, Ruby,
6Breit, Ali, Leah, Golda, Shaina, Joseph, David, Helen, Aviva,
7and Nathan; his sisters, Phyllis Shapps and Carole Kaplan; and
8his sister-in-law, Ilene Strauss; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan will be remembered fondly by all who
10knew and loved him as a loving and devoted father and
11grandfather, whose kindness and dedication to his Jewish
12heritage served as an inspiration to all; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15his family and friends, the passing of Howard Kaplan; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Howard Kaplan as an expression of
19our sympathy.
