2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of
Howard Kaplan, who passed away on June |
4 | | 19, 2011; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan was a native Chicagoan who grew up |
6 | | in a conservative Jewish working-class family in East Rogers |
7 | | Park; he met his future wife while he was a student at Sullivan |
8 | | High School and she was attending Senn High School; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan was employed as an attorney, a |
10 | | certified public accountant, and a real estate developer; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan was a business leader and a Jewish |
12 | | community activist who held important posts in local, national, |
13 | | and international Jewish and civic organizations for many |
14 | | decades; he served as chairman of the Board of Governors of |
15 | | Israel Bonds' Midwest office; he was a board member of the |
16 | | Israel Bonds national organization for more than 15 years; he |
17 | | served as the 1996 general campaign chairman for the Jewish |
18 | | United Fund; he was a past chairperson of the Jewish Community |
19 | | Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan |
20 | | Chicago; he served as president of Hadassah Associates; he was |
21 | | a member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for |
22 | | Israel; he was also a past president of Northwest Suburban |

1 | | Jewish Congregation, a trustee of Hebrew University, and chair |
2 | | of the Cook County Crime Commission; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan is survived by his wife, Marlene; |
4 | | his children, Audra Kaplan Spellberg, Rhonda Katz, Bennett |
5 | | Kaplan, and Patrick Kaplan; his grandchildren, Emile, Ruby, |
6 | | Breit, Ali, Leah, Golda, Shaina, Joseph, David, Helen, Aviva, |
7 | | and Nathan; his sisters, Phyllis Shapps and Carole Kaplan; and |
8 | | his sister-in-law, Ilene Strauss; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Howard Kaplan will be remembered fondly by all who |
10 | | knew and loved him as a loving and devoted father and |
11 | | grandfather, whose kindness and dedication to his Jewish |
12 | | heritage served as an inspiration to all; therefore, be it
|
13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
15 | | his family and friends, the passing of Howard Kaplan; and be it |
16 | | further
|
17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
18 | | presented to the family of Howard Kaplan as an expression of |
19 | | our sympathy.
