2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Ronald Stuart Wilson Chew of Oak Park, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on June 7, 2011; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Ronald Stuart Wilson Chew was born on July 15, | ||||||
6 | 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Marjorie Oberhaltzer | ||||||
7 | and Russell Chew; he was married to Karla Hoover Chew, his | ||||||
8 | partner in peace, for 49 years; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, He was an insurance statistician, teacher, and | ||||||
10 | Korean War veteran; he graduated from Michigan State University | ||||||
11 | (B.A.) and Roosevelt University (M.A.) in economics; he enjoyed | ||||||
12 | canoeing, skiing, camping, biking, jogging, and hiking | ||||||
13 | (especially in the mountains); he was a social activist for | ||||||
14 | peace, labor, economic, environmental justice, and poverty, | ||||||
15 | volunteered at the Columbus Park Food Pantry and West Suburban | ||||||
16 | PADS, and was a member of Veterans for Peace and the Oak Park | ||||||
17 | Committee for Truth and Justice; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, He was a generous contributor to over 65 | ||||||
19 | organizations, including earthquake relief in Haiti, UUSC-UUA, | ||||||
20 | Partners for Peace, Habitat for Humanity, Oxfam, Lambi Fund, | ||||||
21 | Pakistan flood relief, several American Indian educational | ||||||
22 | organizations, and Iraq Veterans Against the War; he also spent |

| |||||||
1 | several weeks volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in New | ||||||
2 | Orleans over several years following Hurricane Katrina; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, He was a member and past president of Third | ||||||
4 | Unitarian Church of Chicago and past president of Unitarian | ||||||
5 | Universalists for a Just Economic Community; he could | ||||||
6 | frequently be seen with the group holding anti-war signs at the | ||||||
7 | Austin Boulevard ramp above the Eisenhower Expressway during | ||||||
8 | the early years of the Iraq war.; he and his wife worked with | ||||||
9 | Dick Simpson to found the IVI-IPO (Independent Voters of | ||||||
10 | Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization); he was a longtime | ||||||
11 | member of the Democratic Party of Oak Park and worked for | ||||||
12 | progressive candidates in Oak Park, Chicago, and surrounding | ||||||
13 | communities; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Ron Chew is survived by his wife, Karla; his son, | ||||||
15 | Ryan Chew (Lindsay Beller); his daughter, Tracey Kugelard | ||||||
16 | (Glenn); his grandsons, Jackson and Carter Kugelard; his | ||||||
17 | sisters, Barbara Roy (David) and Nancy Kitch (Gerald); a niece, | ||||||
18 | 2 nephews, and 10 grandnephews and grandnieces, plus his Irish | ||||||
19 | Doodle puppy, Mollie; therefore, be it
| ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
21 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
22 | his family and friends, the passing of Ronald Chew; and be it | ||||||
