2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of
James W. Smirles of Glenview; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, James Smirles began his career in Glenview |
5 | | government as a member of the Village of Glenview Board of |
6 | | Trustees in 1974; in 1981, he became the first "honorary |
7 | | member" of the Chamber of Commerce; in 1985, he became the |
8 | | Glenview village president, a position he held until his |
9 | | retirement in 1993; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, During his tenure as village president, James |
11 | | Smirles faced the daunting task of incorporating the former |
12 | | Glenview Naval Air Station into the larger community after the |
13 | | Pentagon announced it would close the location; today, the more |
14 | | than 1,000 acres once occupied by the station has become a |
15 | | cornerstone of the Glenview community; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, James Smirles served as the manager of the Glen |
17 | | Oak Plaza; at the time of his passing, he was an active member |
18 | | of Glenview's Willow Road Community Advisory Group; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, James Smirles was a member of the Parish Council |
20 | | of Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church and the Glen |
21 | | Club of Glenview; he served on the Board of Directors for the |

1 | | American Society of Safety Engineers and was a past President |
2 | | of Veterans of Safety International; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, In 1999, James Smirles was named Glenview's |
4 | | Citizen of the Year; he served as chairman of the Glenview |
5 | | Centennial Commission; he served as a member of the Waukegan |
6 | | Road Corridor Committee; in 2008, he served as emcee of the |
7 | | Glenview Television production of the village's 4th of July |
8 | | parade; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, On January 4, 2011, the members of the Village of |
10 | | Glenview Board of Trustees voted to designate Prairie Avenue as |
11 | | "Jim Smirles Way" in honor of his many years of dedicated |
12 | | service to the people of Glenview; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, James Smirles was the beloved husband of Regina, |
14 | | nee Stathopulos; the loving father of William J. (Cheri) |
15 | | Smirles; the proud grandfather of Mary Kate and Jonathan |
16 | | Smirles; the dear brother of Janice Smirles and the late |
17 | | Estelle Spurgetis; the devoted son of the late William and |
18 | | Katherine Smirles; the son-in-law of the late James and Stella |
19 | | Stathopulos; the brother-in-law of John (Mary) and the late |
20 | | Gregory Stathopulos; and the fond uncle of Mary Kay Eckert, |
21 | | Marguerite Nelson, Ted Spurgetis, Bill Sweeney, Liz Dorton, |
22 | | Jim, Regina, and Andrew Stathopulos; therefore, be it

1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
3 | | his family and friends, the passing of James W. Smirles; and be |
4 | | it further
|
5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
6 | | presented to the family of James Smirles as an expression of |
7 | | our sympathy.
