SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Janet J. Lehman of Naperville, who passed
4away on February 13, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She was born Janet J. Coggins in Lenoir, North
6Carolina; after graduating from Duke University, she was
7working as a social worker in North Carolina when her employer
8sent her to a summer program on alcohol studies at Yale
9University; there, she met a young minister, Kenneth Lehman,
10who worked on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana; and
 
11    WHEREAS, They later realized that their callings were
12intertwined and within a year were married; after a few years
13in Montana, the couple moved to Naperville, where in 1960 they
14co-founded Knox Presbyterian Church; Mrs. Lehman sang in the
15choir and continued her career in social work; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 1990, Mrs. Lehman helped create a chapter of
17the Stephen Ministry at Knox Presbyterian Church, where she
18trained lay members in providing one-on-one care and counseling
19to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, unemployed, and
20those facing a crisis or life challenge; and
 
21    WHEREAS, After raising her children, Mrs. Lehman received a

1master's degree in social work from George Williams College in
2Downers Grove and soon after began a 10-year career as a school
3social worker in several area school districts, including
4Naperville School District 204, as well as districts in
5Yorkville, Oswego, Sandwich, and Lisle; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In more recent years, she was a marriage counselor
7and had a private counseling office in Oswego; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Janet Lehman is survived by her husband, Reverend
9Kenneth Lehman; her son, Michael; her daughters, Ginny Shugert
10and Tricia Ullestad; and her seven grandchildren; therefore, be
11it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
14her family and friends, the passing of Janet Lehman; and be it
15further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Janet Lehman as a symbol of our
18sincere sympathy.
