|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives
wish to congratulate and thank State |
4 | | Representative Karen May for her
many years of service to the |
5 | | people of the State of Illinois; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Representative May was first elected to the
|
7 | | Illinois House of Representatives in 2000; she has been a
|
8 | | tireless and diligent advocate for the 58th District; and she
|
9 | | has held a number of leadership positions, including chair of
|
10 | | the Telecommunications Committee and chair of the Environment &
|
11 | | Energy Committee; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Representative May has been a progressive and
|
13 | | independent voice in Springfield and a strong proponent of
|
14 | | environmental protection, ethics reform, property tax relief,
|
15 | | common-sense gun laws, access to affordable health care, State
|
16 | | budget reforms, efficient transportation, and improved
|
17 | | education; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Representative May has protected the rights of |
19 | | disabled
persons in Illinois; she successfully fought for and |
20 | | passed
legislation to improve access to parking for those who |
21 | | lawfully
use spots designated for the disabled, while cracking |
22 | | down on
scofflaws; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Representative May authored and passed public |
2 | | pension
reforms to end abuses and to begin to create long-term |
3 | | stability
of the State's pension systems; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Representative May has consistently worked to |
5 | | protect
our children; she sponsored and passed legislation |
6 | | making radon
testing and removal a condition of daycare |
7 | | licensing; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, As founder and a co-chair of the Legislative Green
|
9 | | Caucus, Representative May fought for legislation creating a
|
10 | | State council to investigate and recommend policies to promote
|
11 | | the use of electric vehicles; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Representative May was as comfortable introducing |
13 | | and
passing complicated legislation as she was starring on |
14 | | stage
during the Conference of Women Legislators' Capitol |
15 | | Capers shows
in Springfield; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, A woman of many talents, Representative May got |
17 | | her start in public
affairs as a newspaper reporter in |
18 | | Chicago's northern suburbs,
covering local government; she |
19 | | later started her own public
relations firm, serving as |
20 | | president; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Representative May is a former member of the |
2 | | Highland
Park City Council; she also previously served as the |
3 | | chair of
the Highland Park Preservation Commission and member |
4 | | of the
board of directors of the United Way; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, As vice-president of the League of Women Voters of
|
6 | | Highland Park, Representative May gained a broad perspective on
|
7 | | public policy and spearheaded legislative efforts in the areas
|
8 | | of campaign finance and election reform; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Representative May and her husband, Mort, have |
10 | | lived in Highland
Park for over 30 years; their 2 children |
11 | | attended Highland
Park public schools and now live in the area |
12 | | with their families, which include all 4 of Karen and Mort's
|
13 | | grandchildren; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Representative May will be missed by her |
15 | | colleagues,
who hold her dedication, honesty, energy, and wit |
16 | | in the highest
regard; therefore, be it
|
17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
18 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
19 | | we congratulate and thank State Representative Karen May for |
20 | | her
years of dedicated service; and be it further
