HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate and thank State
4Representative Karen May for her many years of service to the
5people of the State of Illinois; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Representative May was first elected to the
7Illinois House of Representatives in 2000; she has been a
8tireless and diligent advocate for the 58th District; and she
9has held a number of leadership positions, including chair of
10the Telecommunications Committee and chair of the Environment &
11Energy Committee; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Representative May has been a progressive and
13independent voice in Springfield and a strong proponent of
14environmental protection, ethics reform, property tax relief,
15common-sense gun laws, access to affordable health care, State
16budget reforms, efficient transportation, and improved
17education; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Representative May has protected the rights of
19disabled persons in Illinois; she successfully fought for and
20passed legislation to improve access to parking for those who
21lawfully use spots designated for the disabled, while cracking
22down on scofflaws; and

1    WHEREAS, Representative May authored and passed public
2pension reforms to end abuses and to begin to create long-term
3stability of the State's pension systems; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Representative May has consistently worked to
5protect our children; she sponsored and passed legislation
6making radon testing and removal a condition of daycare
7licensing; and
 
8    WHEREAS, As founder and a co-chair of the Legislative Green
9Caucus, Representative May fought for legislation creating a
10State council to investigate and recommend policies to promote
11the use of electric vehicles; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Representative May was as comfortable introducing
13and passing complicated legislation as she was starring on
14stage during the Conference of Women Legislators' Capitol
15Capers shows in Springfield; and
 
16    WHEREAS, A woman of many talents, Representative May got
17her start in public affairs as a newspaper reporter in
18Chicago's northern suburbs, covering local government; she
19later started her own public relations firm, serving as
20president; and

1    WHEREAS, Representative May is a former member of the
2Highland Park City Council; she also previously served as the
3chair of the Highland Park Preservation Commission and member
4of the board of directors of the United Way; and
 
5    WHEREAS, As vice-president of the League of Women Voters of
6Highland Park, Representative May gained a broad perspective on
7public policy and spearheaded legislative efforts in the areas
8of campaign finance and election reform; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Representative May and her husband, Mort, have
10lived in Highland Park for over 30 years; their 2 children
11attended Highland Park public schools and now live in the area
12with their families, which include all 4 of Karen and Mort's
13grandchildren; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Representative May will be missed by her
15colleagues, who hold her dedication, honesty, energy, and wit
16in the highest regard; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we congratulate and thank State Representative Karen May for
20her years of dedicated service; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
