|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the death of |
4 | | Thomas E. Harrington, Sr. of Champaign, who passed away on |
5 | | August 8, 2012; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Harrington, Sr. was born on March 2, 1931, |
7 | | in Urbana to Earl C. and Genevieve E. Harrington; he attended |
8 | | Holy Cross School and Champaign High School and graduated in |
9 | | 1949 as a member of the class known as the "49ers"; he |
10 | | graduated from the University of Illinois in 1953 and from the |
11 | | University of Illinois College of Law School in 1955; he |
12 | | married Andrea Gunn on August 21, 1954, in Danville; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Harrington, Sr. started his law career in |
14 | | 1955 by joining Busch and Harrington; he was appointed |
15 | | Champaign County Public Defender in 1957 and served until 1959; |
16 | | he then returned to Busch and Harrington and served them for |
17 | | over 50 years; through the years he worked with his father |
18 | | Earl, a founding partner, his brother Kenny, his son Dan, and |
19 | | his grandsons Patrick and Andrew; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Harrington, Sr. was active in the business |
21 | | community throughout his career, helping to shape the |
22 | | community; he was active in numerous charitable causes |
|

1 | | including St. Matthew Catholic Church; he served as lead |
2 | | fundraiser for the School of St. Thomas More, where the school |
3 | | gymnasium was named in his honor; he was made a Knight of St. |
4 | | Gregory by the Vatican; he served on the Carle Foundation Board |
5 | | of Trustees from 1988 to 1997, acting as chairman from 1991 to |
6 | | 1993; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Harrington, Sr. was an honorary varsity "I" |
8 | | Man recipient in 1989 and was an Illini fan all his life; he |
9 | | was an avid Cubs fan, honeymooning at Wrigley Field and |
10 | | celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary there years later; he |
11 | | loved golfing with his family and friends and was at home at |
12 | | both Champaign Country Club, where he served as president in |
13 | | 1971, and Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach, Florida, again |
14 | | serving as president in 1983; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Harrington, Sr. was preceded in death by |
16 | | his parents, Earl and Genevieve Harrington; his in-laws, W. |
17 | | Kenneth Porter and Leta Porter; and his sister, Sister Teresa |
18 | | Ann Harrington OSB; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Harrington, Sr. is survived by his wife, |
20 | | Andrea; his sons, Tom Harrington Jr. (Barb), Dan Harrington |
21 | | (Marianne), Tim Harrington (Kris), and Steve Harrington (Lee); |
22 | | his grandchildren, Elizabeth Wellman (Rob), Thomas E. |
23 | | Harrington III, Patrick Harrington, Andrew Harrington (Emily), |

7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
8 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
9 | | we mourn the death of Thomas Harrington, Sr., and we extend our |
10 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew |
11 | | and love him; and be it further

12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
13 | | presented to the family of Thomas Harrington, Sr. as an |
14 | | expression of our deepest sympathy.
