HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate Galewood Community Church 
4United Church of Christ on the occasion of the 100th 
5anniversary of its founding; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church was founded in 1912, 
7with a total congregation of 19 members; it was the only church 
8that served the Galewood area for several years; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church was expanded 3 
10different times throughout its history; at the beginning it was 
11a gathering space only, then in 1917, a chapel was built, and 
12years later a community wing with full basement, full kitchen, 
13and several classrooms was constructed; and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church chose to be Open and 
15Affirming, when it was unpopular for churches to select that 
16distinction; it selected its first African American pastor, 
17Rev. Dr. Tasha M. Brown, in September 2012; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church has had many youth 
19programs such as Youth Outreach Services with Rev. Stan Davis; 
20it had the Executive Director of Community Renewal Society 
21serve as its associate pastor for many years, Rev. Dr. Calvin

2    WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church has always had a 
3difficult time, and each year it was not always expected to 
4survive its struggles, but it continues on; it has always been 
5on the cusp of firsts, taking stands, and moving forward; 
6therefore, be it
  
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
8NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
9we congratulate Galewood Community Church United Church of 
10Christ on its 100th anniversary; and be it further
  
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
12presented to the members of Galewood Community Church United 
13Church of Christ as an expression of our esteem and respect.
