2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Raymond | ||||||
4 | L. Schaeffer of Carlyle, who passed away on May 1, 2012; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, He was born on the family farm south of Beckemeyer | ||||||
6 | on August 13, 1922, to Louis and Cecilia, nee Beckmann, | ||||||
7 | Schaeffer; after his mother passed away in December of 1927, he | ||||||
8 | was raised by his uncle and aunt, Fred "Fritz" and Elizabeth | ||||||
9 | Beckmann in Bartelso; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, After graduating from grade school in Bartelso in | ||||||
11 | 1936, he worked as a farmhand in the Bartelso area; he went to | ||||||
12 | work at the Moran shoe factory in Carlyle in 1941 and it was | ||||||
13 | there that he met his future wife, Dorothy Schiermann of | ||||||
14 | Carlyle; he and Dorothy were married at St. Mary Church in | ||||||
15 | Carlyle, on July 11, 1944; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, As a member of the "Greatest Generation," Ray | ||||||
17 | served in General Dean's 44th Infantry Division of the United | ||||||
18 | States Army in Europe in World War II; he worked as a | ||||||
19 | bricklayer and contractor for many years and later was a life | ||||||
20 | insurance salesman for CK&L of I; Ray was an active member and | ||||||
21 | past commander of the VFW Post 3523 in Carlyle; he was also a | ||||||
22 | charter member of the Bartelso Catholic War Veterans, and a |

1 | member of the Beckemeyer American Legion Post 1227 and Carlyle | ||||||
2 | Knights of Columbus; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; his | ||||||
4 | brothers, John Schaeffer and Cyril Schniers; his sister, Mary | ||||||
5 | Gehrs; his sister-in-law, Mary Alice Schaeffer; and his | ||||||
6 | brothers-in-law, Ferdy Gehrs and Kenny Koenig; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Raymond L. Schaeffer is survived by his wife of 67 | ||||||
8 | years, Dorothy; their children and spouses, Kay (Ed) Agustin, | ||||||
9 | Barb (Dan) Haselhorst, Marilyn (Gary) Setser, Dan (Maureen) | ||||||
10 | Schaeffer, Pat (Rich) Boien, and Dave (Kathy) Schaeffer; his | ||||||
11 | brother, Vic Schaeffer; his sister, Stella Koenig; and his | ||||||
12 | sisters-in-law, Alvina Schaeffer and Janet Schniers; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Ray is survived by 16 grandchildren who were his | ||||||
14 | greatest joy; he passed away one week after the birth of his | ||||||
15 | tenth great-grandchild; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Ray was laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery | ||||||
17 | following a service with Reverend George Mauck at St. Mary's | ||||||
18 | Church in Carlyle, the same church where he and his wife | ||||||
19 | married, commemorated their 60th wedding anniversary, attended | ||||||
20 | church regularly for the majority of their lives, and | ||||||
21 | recognized innumerable milestones in the growth of their loving | ||||||
22 | family; and

1 | WHEREAS, Ray lived every day with a grateful heart and a | ||||||
2 | radiant sense of humor, playing bingo regularly with his | ||||||
3 | brother Vic, becoming a Wii bowling team member at the Carlyle | ||||||
4 | Healthcare Center, singing to his wife Dorothy, gathering the | ||||||
5 | family together for his 89th birthday celebration, and cheering | ||||||
6 | his beloved St. Louis Cardinals to their 2011 World Series win; | ||||||
7 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
9 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
10 | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | ||||||
11 | Raymond L. Schaeffer; and be it further
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That we pledge to continue to remember and | ||||||
13 | cherish in our hearts the time spent in uniform by all of our | ||||||
14 | American veterans; our country is what it is today because of | ||||||
15 | these
brave men and women; and be it further | ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the family of Raymond L. Schaeffer as a symbol of | ||||||
18 | our sincere sympathy.
