HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Police
4Chief Michael O'Connell of Tinley Park; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and
6Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command; he
7also held a master's degree in criminal justice from Lewis
8University; and
 
9    WHEREAS, He had a long and distinguished career in law
10enforcement; he began his career in 1972 as a patrol officer
11with the Riverdale Police Department, and he served as police
12chief of the Riverdale Police Department for 6 years; in 1995,
13he was appointed to serve as police chief of the Village of
14Tinley Park, where he served until his passing; and
 
15    WHEREAS, He taught criminal justice courses at South
16Suburban College for several years; and
 
17    WHEREAS, He was active on numerous Illinois Association of
18Chiefs of Police committees, including those that focus on
19domestic terrorism and homeland security; he also served on the
20Executive Board of the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of
21Police; and

1    WHEREAS, He was widely respected and influential
2throughout the Illinois law enforcement community; he was the
3recipient of the 2005 "Police Chief of the Year" award from the
4Illinois State Crime Commission for his work; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Michael O'Connell is survived by his wife, Barb;
6his daughter, Colleen, and his son-in-law, Nick Palmer; his
7son, Michael, his daughter-in-law, Liz, and their children,
8Emma and Patrick; and his daughter, Michelle, his son-in-law,
9Paul Anichini, and their children, Joslyn and Alyson;
10therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
14Michael O'Connell; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Police Chief Michael O'Connell as a
17symbol of our sincere sympathy.
