2 | WHEREAS, The Niles North High School Chess Team won all 7 | ||||||
3 | of its matches and captured the Illinois High School | ||||||
4 | Association (IHSA) 2012 State Chess Championship crown at the | ||||||
5 | State tournament held February 10 and 11, 2012, in Peoria; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Junior David Paykin demonstrated exemplary skill, | ||||||
7 | tenacity, and fighting spirit by winning his crucial sixth | ||||||
8 | round match in a momentous come from behind victory which kept | ||||||
9 | the team's hopes alive, and ultimately led to the team securing | ||||||
10 | the championship title; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The Niles North High School Chess Team finished in | ||||||
12 | fifth place at the United States Federation National K-12 | ||||||
13 | Championship Tournament held April 12-15, 2012, in | ||||||
14 | Minneapolis, Minnesota; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Senior Eric Rosen finished in second place | ||||||
16 | individually at the National K-12 Championship and, along with | ||||||
17 | his partner, Matthew Dahl of Edina, Minnesota, captured the | ||||||
18 | National Bughouse Championship in a sanctioned side event | ||||||
19 | competition; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Chess Team Coach Harry Kyriazes is recognized as | ||||||
21 | one of the premier high school coaches in the United States and |

| |||||||
1 | the State of Illinois; he has coached the team since 1999 and | ||||||
2 | guided the team to State championship titles in 2006, 2010, and | ||||||
3 | 2012, as well as 4 second place finished, and 2 third place | ||||||
4 | finishes at State championship tournaments during his tenure as | ||||||
5 | coach; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Coach Kyriazes and his fellow coaches, Heather | ||||||
7 | Ingraham and Mases Hagopian, are recognized for their unique | ||||||
8 | and innovative approaches in providing a nurturing training | ||||||
9 | environment where the qualities of teamwork, mutual respect, | ||||||
10 | camaraderie, and leadership development are held in the highest | ||||||
11 | regard; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Niles Township High School District 219 has | ||||||
13 | supported the chess program over the years, and in so doing has | ||||||
14 | furthered its mission to improve the academic achievement of | ||||||
15 | every student by offering programs so that every student may | ||||||
16 | achieve his or her potential; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Niles North High School will unveil a banner on | ||||||
18 | May 7, 2012 recognizing the accomplishments of the 2012 State | ||||||
19 | Champion Chess Team; the banner will be on display on the west | ||||||
20 | side of the Niles North building where it will be visible to | ||||||
21 | all motorists traveling on Interstate 94; therefore, be it

22 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

1 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
2 | we congratulate the Niles North High School Chess Team on | ||||||
3 | winning the 2012 State championship and wish team members and | ||||||
4 | coaches all the best in their future endeavors; and be it | ||||||
5 | further

6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the Niles North High School Chess Team as a symbol | ||||||
8 | of our respect and esteem.
