1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The State of Illinois owes a debt of gratitude to | ||||||
3 | the people of the United States of America, President Obama, | ||||||
4 | and the United States Congress for their continued support of | ||||||
5 | the domestic automobile industry; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, In manufacturing, it is important to create a | ||||||
7 | product that is high in quality, yet affordable to the target | ||||||
8 | market, and is concurrently sustainable and profitable for the | ||||||
9 | producer; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Our economy, and the domestic auto industry in | ||||||
11 | particular, was faced with unprecedented challenges; these | ||||||
12 | challenges, which in large part emanated from a maelstrom of | ||||||
13 | rising energy costs, a massive credit crunch, and other global | ||||||
14 | economic forces, combined in a way that threatened the | ||||||
15 | existence of our nation's domestic automakers; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Clearly, this segment of our economy was far too | ||||||
17 | important to the State of Illinois and the United States to be | ||||||
18 | allowed to wither and potentially fail; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The U.S. automotive industry and the advancements | ||||||
20 | associated with automotive transportation have been the | ||||||
21 | lifeblood of the American economy for decades; American |

1 | automakers have been responsible for many of the most important | ||||||
2 | manufacturing advancements in the past century, and have been a | ||||||
3 | crucial part of the "Arsenal of Democracy" that helped assure | ||||||
4 | our victory in time of war; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Today, more than 3 million direct and indirect | ||||||
6 | American jobs and countless numbers of retirees are dependent | ||||||
7 | on the domestic automotive industry; therefore, a strong | ||||||
8 | showing of support for our domestic automakers was critical at | ||||||
9 | that important juncture in our nation's history; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Illinois auto workers produce the Ford Explorer, | ||||||
11 | Ford Taurus, and Lincoln MKS in Chicago, the Dodge Caliber, | ||||||
12 | Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, and Dodge Dart in Belvidere, and | ||||||
13 | the Mitsubishi Gallant and Outlander Sport in Normal; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, An American-made vehicle can be identified as an | ||||||
15 | automobile with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that | ||||||
16 | begins with a 1, 4, or 5; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Latest reports indicate that strong profits are | ||||||
18 | being earned across the board by all 3 domestic auto | ||||||
19 | manufacturers; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, By taking difficult but necessary action, the | ||||||
21 | American people have helped the auto industry add back more |

1 | than 200,000 jobs, the best period of job growth for the | ||||||
2 | industry in more than a decade; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
4 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
5 | we bestow our highest gratitude to those consumers in this | ||||||
6 | State and the nation at large who believed that the domestic | ||||||
7 | auto industry was too important to let die; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That we give our highest praise to our domestic | ||||||
9 | auto industry, who, on their darkest day, found a way to | ||||||
10 | continue to do business in a way that is both profitable and | ||||||
11 | sustainable for generations to come; and be it further | ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the | ||||||
14 | Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the | ||||||
15 | members of the Illinois Congressional delegation; and be it | ||||||
16 | further | ||||||
17 | RESOLVED, That we urge all Illinois legislators and | ||||||
18 | citizens to support their neighbors, their community, and their | ||||||
19 | country by considering an American-made car for their next | ||||||
20 | automobile purchase.
