| 2 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Alex Martinez, a United States Marine |
| 3 | | Corps member, was killed in action while nobly serving his |
| 4 | | country conducting combat operations in the Helmand Province, |
| 5 | | Afghanistan; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was part of the 1st Combat |
| 7 | | Engineer Battalion of the 1st Marine Division in Camp |
| 8 | | Pendleton, California; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was born and raised in Elgin, |
| 10 | | where he attended Harriet Gifford Elementary, Abbott Middle |
| 11 | | School, and Larkin High School; by the time he was a junior at |
| 12 | | Larkin High School, he knew he wanted to be a Marine; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, His desire to serve his country stemmed from his |
| 14 | | family history of service, as his father, Enrique Martinez, is |
| 15 | | a longtime Navy reservist and his aunt served in the Army; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez married his high school |
| 17 | | sweetheart, Julianna in 2008; and then graduated early from |
| 18 | | high school in 2009; a few weeks after turning 18, Corporal |
| 19 | | Martinez enlisted in the Marine Corps and left for boot camp |
| 20 | | the next month; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was on his second deployment to |
| 2 | | Afghanistan when he was killed; and
|
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez hoped to start a family with his |
| 4 | | wife as soon as he completed his service and dreamed of someday |
| 5 | | becoming a firefighter; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, His faith was very important to Corporal Martinez, |
| 7 | | who attended Life Changers International Church; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Alex Martinez is survived by his wife, |
| 9 | | Julianna Martinez; his mother, Socorro Bethke; his father, |
| 10 | | Enrique Martinez; and his siblings: Eileen Bethke, James |
| 11 | | Bethke, Jenny Martinez, Brandon Martinez, Nicholas Martinez, |
| 12 | | and Ilyana Martinez; therefore, be it
|
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 14 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 15 | | we mourn, along with his family, friends, and a grateful |
| 16 | | nation, the passing of Corporal Alex Martinez; and be it |
| 17 | | further

| 18 | | RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Corporal Alex |
| 19 | | Martinez and his willingness to serve his country, which led to |
| 20 | | him making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further
