2 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of Women's History Month in the |
3 | | State of Illinois, the members of the Illinois House of |
4 | | Representatives are pleased to recognize State Senator Iris |
5 | | Martinez as the first Latina Illinois State Senator; and

6 | | WHEREAS, In 2003, Senator Martinez was the first Latina |
7 | | woman to be elected to the Illinois State Senate; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Senator
Martinez has been particularly concerned |
9 | | with issues concerning women's health; in her first year in |
10 | | Springfield, she ensured that community agencies like the |
11 | | Children's Place, an agency that works with children and |
12 | | families affected by HIV and AIDS, and Concordia Avondale |
13 | | Community Center, which provides daycare, after-school |
14 | | programs, and a center for seniors, received State funding to |
15 | | continue their programming; and

16 | | WHEREAS, To help protect consumers from becoming victims of |
17 | | identity theft, Senator Martinez helped pass a law that |
18 | | requires all insurance cards be issued without a Social |
19 | | Security number; and

20 | | WHEREAS, In 2004, Senator Martinez was awarded the Hillary |
21 | | Rodham Clinton Leadership Award, an award presented to an |
