2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of George L. |
4 | | Sodemann of Champaign, who passed away on February 19, 2012; |
5 | | and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, He was born on December 7, 1926, in Clinton, Iowa, |
7 | | the only son of Hugo Sodemann and Elsie Schroeder Sodemann; he |
8 | | married Marjorie Edwards Graef on April 1, 1949; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, He graduated from Lyons High School in Clinton, |
10 | | Iowa, in 1944, followed by a 16-month tour of duty with the |
11 | | United States Navy; he graduated from the University of Iowa |
12 | | College of Engineering in 1950; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, In 1955, he established the civil engineering firm |
14 | | of Sodemann and Associates, Inc., serving as president until he |
15 | | sold it to his son Steven in 2008; he was a Registered |
16 | | Professional Engineer in the states of California, Florida, |
17 | | Illinois, and South Carolina; he was an honorary member and |
18 | | former president of the Illinois Society of Professional |
19 | | Engineers, former president of the Consulting Engineers |
20 | | Council of Illinois, former board member of the American |
21 | | Consulting Engineers Council, and a member of NSPE, ASCE, APWA, |
22 | | AWWA, and the Water Pollution Control Federation; and

1 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his professional activities, his |
2 | | community service included time serving on the Board of |
3 | | Directors of the McKinley YMCA, Mercy Hospital, Provena |
4 | | Covenant Medical Center, Covenant Medical Center Foundation |
5 | | (past chairman), and Covenant Medical Center Hospital Planning |
6 | | Committee; he was a member of the Board of Directors of the |
7 | | United Way of Champaign County, including serving as the |
8 | | president of the board in 1987 and the campaign chairman in |
9 | | 1985; he served as the board chairman for the United Way of |
10 | | Illinois in 1997 and 1998; he was Parkland Community College |
11 | | Foundation Fund Drive co-chair in 2000-2001; he and his wife, |
12 | | Marge, were named the Champaign Chamber of Commerce 2010 |
13 | | Citizens of the Year; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, George Sodemann is survived by his wife, Marjorie; |
16 | | his children, Pamela Sodemann, Steven (Lauren) Sodemann, Nancy |
17 | | (Lynn) Standish, and Scott (Lonna) Sodemann;
his |
18 | | grandchildren, Terri Pones, Kara (Chris) Olsen, Erica Tyler, |
19 | | Kirsten (Ben) Zumbahlen, Drew (Brittany) Tyler, Todd (Sandi) |
20 | | Standish, and Gina Sodemann and Luke Sodemann; his |
21 | | great-grandchildren, Alyssa Cole and Logan Pones, Kaelan |
22 | | Olsen, Ryan Olsen, and Tyler Olsen, Paige Fair, Logan |
23 | | Zumbahlen, Taylor Standish, Zack Standish, and Sofia Standish; |

2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
3 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
4 | | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of |
5 | | George Sodemann; and be it further
|
6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
7 | | presented to the family of George Sodemann as a symbol of our |
8 | | sincere sympathy.
