| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to recognize the Department of | ||||||
| 4 | Neurosurgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago for its | ||||||
| 5 | numerous achievements and contributions to the State of | ||||||
| 6 | Illinois; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, In September 2007, the Department of Neurosurgery | ||||||
| 8 | at the University of Illinois, Chicago formed the only brain | ||||||
| 9 | aneurysm support group in the State of Illinois with the | ||||||
| 10 | assistance of brain aneurysm survivor Janet Sutherland, nurse | ||||||
| 11 | practitioner Kate Walsh, and neurosurgeon Dr. Sepideh | ||||||
| 12 | Amin-Hanjani; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Department Head and Professor Dr. Fady Charbel, | ||||||
| 14 | along with his faculty and staff, recognized the need for peer | ||||||
| 15 | support during the challenging time of being diagnosed with a | ||||||
| 16 | brain aneurysm; they could see that patients were unaware of | ||||||
| 17 | the facts and had questions that might remain unanswered; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an | ||||||
| 19 | estimated 6 million people in the United States have an | ||||||
| 20 | unruptured brain aneurysm, or approximately 1 in 50 people; a | ||||||
| 21 | brain aneurysm ruptures every 18 minutes and are fatal in 40% | ||||||
| 22 | of cases; and

| 1 | WHEREAS, The UIC Department of Neurosurgery, established | ||||||
| 2 | in 1939, ranks first in the State for treating the most | ||||||
| 3 | aneurysm cases and understands the need for extraordinary | ||||||
| 4 | patient support; the department has demonstrated this through | ||||||
| 5 | innovative state of the art treatment as well as its lifesaving | ||||||
| 6 | care and compassion for brain aneurysm patients and survivors; | ||||||
| 7 | neurosurgeons at UIC have treated more than 4,000 brain | ||||||
| 8 | aneurysms and continue to have some of the most skilled | ||||||
| 9 | neurosurgeons to treat brain aneurysms; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, The Chicago Chapter of the Brain Aneurysm | ||||||
| 11 | Foundation will hold its second annual Survivor in the City | ||||||
| 12 | benefit on September 30, 2011; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 14 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 15 | we recognize the Department of Neurosurgery at the University | ||||||
| 16 | of Illinois, Chicago and their work with brain aneurysm support | ||||||
| 17 | groups in the State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
| 18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 19 | presented to the Department of Neurosurgery at the University | ||||||
| 20 | of Illinois, Chicago as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
