HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives recognize that the United States Postal
4Service is vital to the State of Illinois by providing mail
5services and employment to many Illinois residents; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service employs 28,670
7employees in the State of Illinois and 574,000 employees
8nationwide; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service is currently
10faced with very difficult financial challenges; these
11challenges pose a threat to the jobs of the United States
12Postal Service employees; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The current financial challenges faced by the
14United States Postal Service is projected to lead to 120,000
15layoffs nationwide and the closure of 3,700 post offices; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has an interest in
17protecting and preserving the jobs of Illinois residents and
18the United States Postal Service; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives supports
20the passage of the United States Postal Service Pension

1Obligation Recalculation and Restoration Act of 2011 (H.R.
21351), which calls for the Office of Personal Management to
3recalculate the USPS surplus in the Civil Service Retirement
4System, transfer the recalculated surplus to the Postal Service
5Retiree Health Benefit Fund, and use the surplus to make its
6payments; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Passage of the United States Postal Service
8Pension Obligation Recalculation and Restoration Act of 2011 is
9a necessary measure to help prevent the layoffs and closures
10and protect the United States Postal Service from financial
11default; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we urge the members of Congress to pass the United States
15Postal Service Pension Obligation Recalculation and
16Restoration Act of 2011 to aid the United States Postal Service
17in their financial challenges and help save the jobs of many
18Illinois postal workers; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20presented to the Speaker and Minority Leader of the United
21States House of Representatives, the Majority and Minority
22Leaders of the United States Senate, and the members of the
23Illinois congressional delegation.
