2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of the | ||||||
4 | Bloomington Kiwanis Club on the 90th anniversary of the | ||||||
5 | organization; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, In the late spring of 1921 a group of men headed | ||||||
7 | by Kaywin Kennedy, A. L. Beyer, and C. W. Frey, among others, | ||||||
8 | called their friends and associates together to form a | ||||||
9 | Bloomington Kiwanis Club; the group, which met at the Illinois | ||||||
10 | House Hotel, grew to more than 50 members during the summer; | ||||||
11 | and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Soon after their formation the group applied to | ||||||
13 | Kiwanis International to be chartered as an official club; the | ||||||
14 | charter was granted on September 21, 1921; the charter was | ||||||
15 | delivered to Bloomington on November 14, 1921 by the sponsoring | ||||||
16 | Kiwanis Club of Springfield; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, In 1931, the Bloomington Pantagraph, under the | ||||||
18 | leadership of Kiwanian Reverend Breen, began sponsoring Camp | ||||||
19 | Limberlost, a camp for area children; by 1932, Kiwanians were | ||||||
20 | increasingly involved in the project and in 1934 the Kiwanis | ||||||
21 | Club became a co-sponsor; in 1940, The Bloomington Kiwanis Club | ||||||
22 | became the sole sponsor of the project; for more than 75 years |

1 | this project has continued and is now the longest running | ||||||
2 | continuous project in all of Kiwanis International. It is also | ||||||
3 | the oldest residential camp in Illinois; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, In 1932, The Bloomington Kiwanis Club, in | ||||||
5 | association with the Bloomington Pantagraph, developed a | ||||||
6 | Community Gardens project in which several acres of land south | ||||||
7 | of town were loaned by land owners to plant vegetable gardens | ||||||
8 | to help feed a community suffering from the deprivations of the | ||||||
9 | Great Depression; the project provided work for unemployed men | ||||||
10 | in the community and also provided a bounteous harvest to feed | ||||||
11 | the hungry; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, The Bloomington Kiwanis Club has developed many | ||||||
13 | fundraisers to help support its many projects, including the | ||||||
14 | annual Peanut Days, the annual Pancake Days, Kiwanis Cheese | ||||||
15 | sales, and its newest fundraiser, the Kiwanis Mother's Day | ||||||
16 | Flower Sale, which has been a popular event on the first | ||||||
17 | weekend in May; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, In 2011, the Bloomington Kiwanis Club celebrates | ||||||
19 | 90 years of service to this community; over the years it has | ||||||
20 | partnered with many agencies in the community to help make | ||||||
21 | Bloomington a better place to live, work, and grow; therefore, | ||||||
22 | be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
2 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
3 | we congratulate the members of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club on | ||||||
4 | this momentous anniversary and wish them the best for years to | ||||||
5 | come; and be it further

6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the Bloomington Kiwanis Club as a symbol of our | ||||||
8 | respect and esteem.
