2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the owners and |
4 | | employees of the Illini Media Company on the occasion of the |
5 | | organization's 100th anniversary; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, The Illini Media Company is a non-profit |
7 | | corporation that is totally self-supported and independent; |
8 | | the company provides an unsurpassed educational opportunity |
9 | | and hands-on media training for approximately 300 students |
10 | | attending the University of Illinois; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, The Daily Illini began publication in 1871; the |
12 | | Illini Publishing Company was chartered on May 11, 1911 by the |
13 | | State of Illinois as a non-profit corporation established to |
14 | | organize and operate student media at the University of |
15 | | Illinois; directed by a student/faculty board, the IPC was one |
16 | | of the first collegiate publishing companies to practice |
17 | | successfully; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the Illini Media Company has |
19 | | produced numerous publications, including The Daily Illini, |
20 | | Illio, The Illinois Magazine, The Siren, Illinois Technograph |
21 | | Magazine, The Illinois Agriculturalist, The Entrepreneur, The |
22 | | Architectural Year Book, and The R.O.T.C. Journal; today, the |

1 | | Illini Media Company owns and operates The Daily Illini, the |
2 | | Illio yearbook, the Illinois Technograph engineering magazine, |
3 | | and WPGU-FM radio; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, In 1954, WPGU began broadcasting as a pirate radio |
5 | | station wired through the ROTC barracks; in 1959, WPGU joined |
6 | | the Illini Publishing Company; in 1973, WPGU began broadcasting |
7 | | 24 hours a day; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, In August of 1988, Illini Media Company moved its |
9 | | print operations from its original location at 620 E. John |
10 | | Street to a new location at 57 E. Green Street; the |
11 | | organization remained there until 2006, when it moved into its |
12 | | new facility at 512 E. Green Street; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, In 1998, the Daily Illini changed from a paid |
14 | | circulation to a free distribution paper, which increased the |
15 | | paper's circulation from 10,000 to 20,000; the Illini's current |
16 | | circulation is 15,000; the following year, The Daily Illini |
17 | | launched Buzz, a new weekly entertainment magazine; in 2008, |
18 | | the217.com, an entertainment website covering events going on |
19 | | in the Champaign-Urbana
Area, was launched; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, The Illini Media Company and its employees serve |
21 | | as models of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the |
22 | | people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
2 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
3 | | we congratulate the owners and employees of the Illini Media |
4 | | Company on the occasion of the organization's 100th anniversary |
5 | | and wish them continued success and happiness in the future; |
6 | | and be it further

7 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
8 | | presented to the Illini Media Company as a symbol of our esteem |
9 | | and respect.
