2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the | ||||||
4 | Village of Lostant on the occasion of the village's 150th | ||||||
5 | anniversary; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Village of Lostant was founded in Hope | ||||||
7 | Township in southern LaSalle County in 1861 during the first | ||||||
8 | months of the Civil War; the village was originally named | ||||||
9 | Ellsworth, in honor of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, the first | ||||||
10 | officer to be killed in the Civil War; the village was renamed | ||||||
11 | Lostant in 1863 in honor of a stockholder of the Illinois | ||||||
12 | Central Railroad; the village was formally incorporated in | ||||||
13 | 1867; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Located at the intersection of the Illinois | ||||||
15 | Central and New York Central Railroads, the Village of Lostant | ||||||
16 | has served as an important grain shipping point for | ||||||
17 | southwestern LaSalle County since its inception; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, The Village of Lostant, with a population of 498, | ||||||
19 | is representative of many small towns in rural Illinois; | ||||||
20 | Lostant provides important services to southwest LaSalle | ||||||
21 | County, including volunteer fire protection, volunteer | ||||||
22 | ambulance service, a library, a school, a bank, a post office, |

1 | a variety of farm services, and several small manufacturers; | ||||||
2 | and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Lostant has always provided an excellent | ||||||
4 | educational opportunity for local residents; the village's | ||||||
5 | first school was a one room school built in 1862; the village's | ||||||
6 | first two-story school house was built in 1868; students in | ||||||
7 | Lostant consistently match or exceed the performance of their | ||||||
8 | peers around the State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Lostant's residents have served their country in | ||||||
10 | every war since the village's founding; the village's cemetery | ||||||
11 | includes a veteran from the Spanish-American War and at least | ||||||
12 | 14 veterans of the Civil War; American Legion Post 173 | ||||||
13 | continues to serve the veterans of the area; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Lostant is the hometown of Air Force Colonel | ||||||
15 | Milton Hartenbower, the 684th person to fly at Mach 2; Colonel | ||||||
16 | Hartenbower served one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam, | ||||||
17 | and helped design early remote control aircraft during his 27 | ||||||
18 | years in the United States Air Force before retiring to his | ||||||
19 | hometown; in addition, noted Chicago sculptor Laredo Taft | ||||||
20 | favored clay mined in Lostant for his models; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, The citizens of the Village of Lostant will | ||||||
22 | celebrate the 150th anniversary of the village's founding in |

1 | the summer of 2011; therefore, be it
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
3 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
4 | we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Lostant on the | ||||||
5 | occasion of the village's 150th anniversary and wish them | ||||||
6 | continued success and happiness in the future; and be it | ||||||
7 | further

8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to Fred Hartenbower, Mayor of the Village of Lostant, | ||||||
10 | as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
