HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate United States Navy
4Captain John Malfitano as he is relieved of his duties as
5Commanding Officer of the Naval Station Great Lakes; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Captain Malfitano is a native of Pearl River, New
7York; he graduated from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor
8of Engineering in Engineering Science and was commissioned
9through the Aviation Officer Candidate School program in 1986;
10he was designated a Naval Aviator in 1988 and reported to
11Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 120 for initial
12training in the E-2C Hawkeye; and
 
13    WHEREAS, He served in VAW-123 "Screwtops" embarked in USS
14America, completing 3 deployments with Carrier Air Wing (CVW)
151, including combat operations during Operation Desert Storm;
16he also served as an instructor and training landing signal
17officer, an Assistant Officer in Charge, served in combat
18operations during Operation Desert Fox, and commanded the
19Seahawks; during his time as Commanding Officer, the VAW-126
20was selected as recipient of the Commander, Naval Air Force
21Atlantic Battle Efficiency Award and the Commander, Naval Air
22Forces RADM Frank Akers Award for AEW Excellence as the finest
23E-2C Hawkeye squadron in the Navy; he was subsequently selected

1by his peers for the Navy-Marine Corps Leadership Award; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ashore, he has served as Flag Aide-de-camp for the
3Commander Naval Training Center, Great Lakes; he earned a
4Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic
5Studies with Highest Distinction from the Naval War College,
6receiving the President's Honor Graduate Award; he was assigned
7to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as an action
8officer for the VCNO-charted information technology group,
9Task Force Web; he attended the Joint and Combined Warfighting
10School at the Joint Forces Staff College; and he most recently
11served as a Joint Staff Officer for NATO's Supreme Allied
12Commander Transformation in the Strategic Engagement and
13Vision Branch; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Captain Malfitano has accumulated over 4,400
15flight hours and more than 500 arrested landings on 10
16different aircraft carriers; he has earned the Defense
17Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 3
18Strike/Flight Air Medals, the Joint Service Commendation
19Medal, 8 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals (3 with
20combat "V"), and the Navy Achievement Medal; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Captain Malfitano and his wife, Victoria (Vicki)
22are the proud parents of Joseph Elias and William Jacob; and

1    WHEREAS, The formal Change of Command Ceremony will be held
2on July 15, 2011 at the Naval Station Great Lakes; therefore,
3be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we congratulate Captain John Malfitano and wish him continued
7success for years to come; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Captain John Malfitano as a symbol of our respect
10and esteem.
