HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Stephen
4Ray Hartman of St. Joseph, who passed away on May 31, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born on October 20, 1946, in Paxton, a son
6of Lyon Weldon Hartman and Dorothy Fritzen Hartman; he
7graduated from Champaign High School in 1964, and from the
8University of Illinois in 1969, with a degree in ornamental
9horticulture; after graduation, he began his 42-year career as
10a self-employed real estate developer; and
 
11    WHEREAS, In the early years, he built houses, room
12additions, and small apartment buildings; he later specialized
13in campus apartments, eventually joining his brothers, Jeffrey
14Hartman and Michael Hartman, to form JSM Apartments and other
15partnership entities; he was an integral part of the Campustown
162000 Green Street improvement initiative; he was a loyal
17Illini, a lifetime member of the President's Council, and a
18member of the Loyalty Circle; he loved to wear his orange and
19blue and cheer on the football and basketball teams; and
 
20    WHEREAS, He sailed Flying Scot sailboats and participated
21in many one-design regattas; he especially loved to go to the
22mid-winter regatta in Florida; for years he helped host the

1Glow-In-The-Dark Regatta at Clinton Lake, with Flying Scot
2sailors coming from all over the country; and
 
3    WHEREAS, He is remembered as having a "larger than life"
4personality; he was always active in the community; he was a
5member of the St. Joseph-Ogden School Board for 12 years; he
6was interested and involved in Parkland College, and served
7multiple terms on the Parkland College Foundation Board; and he
8was Chair of the local Republican Party for some time; and
 
9    WHEREAS, He loved to travel, especially to Paris and
10Bavaria; he was an avid gardener, recently starting an
11orchid-growing hobby; he was proud of his ability to tie many
12kinds of knots; the Doobie Brothers, Rolling Stones, and any
13kind of vintage rock, was always playing in the background of
14the euchre games; he was a true foodie, with an extensive menu
15collection; he was an accomplished cook and could turn out
16dozens of the world's best cheeseburgers; and
 
17    WHEREAS, He loved the Boy Scouts; he was active in scouting
18for decades; he started as a Webelos leader of Pack 40 in St.
19Joseph, he progressed to Troop 40 Troop Committee, Scoutmaster,
20then Assistant Scoutmaster; he guided his son, Dennis, through
21becoming an Eagle Scout; he was active in many projects at Camp
22Drake, and cooked for many Klondike Derbies and other events;
23he was a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow; in 2001, he

1received the Silver Beaver, the highest award a volunteer can
2attain; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Stephen Hartman is survived by his wife, Laura;
4his daughter, Marianne L. Hartman Tichenor (Christopher); his
5son, Peter E. Hartman (Melissa Johnson Hartman); his daughter,
6Nancy E. Bussell (Eric); his son, Dennis R. Hartman (Andrea
7Wilbon Hartman); his grandchildren, Colette and Conrad
8Tichenor; his brothers, Michael R. Hartman (Debra) and Jeffrey
9R. Hartman (Sarah); his nephews, Christopher Hartman (Gozen),
10Patrick Hartman (Leslie), and Andrew Hartman; his nieces,
11Rachel Hartman, Lauren Hartman, and Michelle Ferrell; and many
12other young people in the community who might as well be his
13sons/daughters; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
17Stephen Hartman; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Stephen Hartman as a symbol of our
20sincere sympathy.
