| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to recognize the students, alumni, | ||||||
| 4 | faculty, and staff of North Central College as they celebrate | ||||||
| 5 | the sesquicentennial of the school; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, The first day of classes were held on November 11, | ||||||
| 7 | 1861, at Plainfield College; the school name changed to | ||||||
| 8 | North-Western College in 1864; the college moved to Naperville | ||||||
| 9 | in 1870; on May 17, 1870, the cornerstone was laid for Old | ||||||
| 10 | Main; and in 1926 the name again changed, to North Central | ||||||
| 11 | College; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, The College founders believed that Christian | ||||||
| 13 | commitment and intellectual attainments were compatible; from | ||||||
| 14 | the beginning, North Central College was nonsectarian in its | ||||||
| 15 | hiring and admission practices; this pioneering concept, along | ||||||
| 16 | with the commitment to inclusiveness and diversity that is the | ||||||
| 17 | hallmark of the United Methodist Church, is the heritage of | ||||||
| 18 | North Central College and continues to add depth and meaning to | ||||||
| 19 | its programs; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, North Central College has, for more than 7 | ||||||
| 21 | generations, educated students who have become leaders in | ||||||
| 22 | science, the arts, education, business, and many other fields; | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | North Central College is a community of learners dedicated to | ||||||
| 2 | preparing informed, involved, principled, and productive | ||||||
| 3 | citizens and leaders over a lifetime; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, North Central College has had 9 presidents in its | ||||||
| 5 | 150-year history, beginning with A.A. Smith; notable alumni | ||||||
| 6 | include: Egyptologist and professor James Henry Breasted, | ||||||
| 7 | appliance company founder Frederick Lewis Maytag, barbed wire | ||||||
| 8 | entrepreneur and Texaco founder John Warne Gates, Olympic Gold | ||||||
| 9 | Medalist Dick Blick, President Ronald Reagan's personal | ||||||
| 10 | physician Dr. Daniel Ruge, and National Institutes of Health | ||||||
| 11 | Deputy Director for Intramural Research Dr. Joseph "Ed" Rall; | ||||||
| 12 | and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, North Central College will commemorate its | ||||||
| 14 | sesquicentennial throughout the 2011-2012 academic year and | ||||||
| 15 | celebrate its actual 150th anniversary on November 11, 2011; | ||||||
| 16 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 18 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 19 | we recognize the 150th anniversary of North Central College, | ||||||
| 20 | and wish all the students, alumni, faculty, and staff the very | ||||||
| 21 | best in this historic year; and be it further
| ||||||
| 22 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||

| 1 | presented to Hal Wilde, President of North Central College, as | ||||||
| 2 | a symbol of our respect and esteem.
