2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Jim | ||||||
4 | Tyree; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jim Tyree grew up in the Beverly neighborhood of | ||||||
6 | Chicago; as a young boy, he delivered the Beverly Review and | ||||||
7 | Southtown Economist newspapers; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Jim Tyree attended St. Barnabas Elementary School | ||||||
9 | and Marist High School; he subsequently attended school in the | ||||||
10 | City Colleges of Chicago system and at Illinois State | ||||||
11 | University, where he earned his bachelor's degree and his | ||||||
12 | Master of Business Administration degree; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Jim Tyree served as chairman and CEO of Mesirow | ||||||
14 | Financial and as chairman of Sun-Times Media; he began his | ||||||
15 | career at Mesirow, a diversified financial services firm, in | ||||||
16 | 1980; after beginning as a research associate, he was named | ||||||
17 | president of the firm in 1990, chief executive officer in 1992 | ||||||
18 | and chairman and chief executive officer in 1994; under his | ||||||
19 | leadership, Mesirow acquired some 50 firms, including the U.S. | ||||||
20 | Corporate Recovery practice from KPMG LLP, Dann Insurance, and | ||||||
21 | Boockford and Company; in October of 2009, he led an investment | ||||||
22 | group that took the parent company of the Chicago Sun-Times and |

1 | dozens of suburban newspapers out of bankruptcy; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, In 2000, Jim Tyree was appointed to serve as board | ||||||
3 | chairman of the City Colleges system by Chicago Mayor Richard | ||||||
4 | M. Daley; he served in the position with pride and distinction | ||||||
5 | for 10 years; he also served on dozens of corporate, civic, and | ||||||
6 | not-for-profit boards, including the board of the University of | ||||||
7 | Chicago Medical Center; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Jim Tyree was well known for his great generosity; | ||||||
9 | he donated more than $500,000 each year to charities; he also | ||||||
10 | championed research on diabetes, a disease that affected him | ||||||
11 | during his life; he was named the 2004 Person of the Year by | ||||||
12 | the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in recognition of his | ||||||
13 | work; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Jim Tyree was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White | ||||||
15 | Sox; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Jim Tyree is survived by his loving wife, Eve, and | ||||||
17 | his children, Jessica, Matthew, and Joseph; therefore, be it
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
19 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
20 | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Jim | ||||||
21 | Tyree; and be it further

2 | presented to the family of Jim Tyree as an expression of our | ||||||
3 | sympathy.
