3 | | citizens young and old with valuable opportunities to learn |
4 | | about the environment and the need to preserve the Earth; and

5 | | WHEREAS, Bird conservation efforts date back to 1869, when |
6 | | Michigan passed a law to protect the Passenger Pigeon; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, In North America, 618 million acres of land, |
8 | | freshwater, and marine
areas or approximately 9% of the |
9 | | continent has been dedicated as wildlife habitat; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Public awareness and concern are crucial |
11 | | components of conserving those areas and the birds and other |
12 | | wildlife that live in those areas; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds and |
14 | | nature, informed about threats to the natural world, and |
15 | | empowered to become involved in addressing those threats can |
16 | | make a tremendous contribution to maintaining healthy bird |
17 | | populations and protecting bird habitats; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Interest in stewardship and conservation can grow |
19 | | by modeling conservation activities and involving people young |
20 | | and old in those activities; and
