Amends the Local Government Employees Political Rights Act. Provides that any law enforcement officer who is elected to the Illinois General Assembly shall be granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or her term of office. Effective immediately.

1 | | AN ACT concerning local government.
|
2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political |
5 | | Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows: |
6 | | (50 ILCS 135/12) |
7 | | Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office. |
8 | | (a) A member of any fire department or fire protection |
9 | | district may: |
10 | | (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve |
11 | | in that public office if elected; |
12 | | (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that |
13 | | public office if appointed; and |
14 | | (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on |
15 | | duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters |
16 | | for the public office for which the member is a candidate.

17 | | (b) A firefighter or law enforcement officer who is elected |
18 | | to the Illinois General Assembly shall, upon written |
19 | | application to the employer, be granted a leave of absence |
20 | | without compensation during his or her term of office.
