SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
730 ILCS 5/3-6-8

    Amends the Unified Code of Corrections. Requires the GED program that the Department of Corrections administers for inmates to provide for the acceptance of GED credits earned while the inmate is not in the custody of the Department, including, but not limited to, credits earned while incarcerated in a county jail.

1    AN ACT concerning criminal law.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Unified Code of Corrections is amended by
5changing Section 3-6-8 as follows:
 
6    (730 ILCS 5/3-6-8)
7    Sec. 3-6-8. General Educational Development (GED)
8programs. The Department of Corrections shall develop and
9establish a program in the Adult Division designed to increase
10the number of committed persons enrolled in programs for the
11high school level Test of General Educational Development (GED)
12and pursuing GED certificates by at least 100% over the 4-year
13period following the effective date of this amendatory Act of
14the 94th General Assembly. The program shall provide for the
15acceptance of GED credits earned by the inmate while not in the
16custody of the Department, including, but not limited to,
17credits earned while incarcerated in a county jail. Pursuant to
18the program, each adult institution and facility shall report
19annually to the Director of Corrections on the number of
20committed persons enrolled in GED programs and those who pass
21the high school level Test of General Educational Development
22(GED), and the number of committed persons in the Adult
23Division who are on waiting lists for participation in the GED
