SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
110 ILCS 947/55

    Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act. In a Section concerning a police officer or fire officer survivor grant, provides that, with respect to disabled police and fire officers, natural children need not be born before the disability occurred in order to receive the grant. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is
5amended by changing Section 55 as follows:
 
6    (110 ILCS 947/55)
7    Sec. 55. Police officer or fire officer survivor grant.
8Grants shall be provided for any spouse, natural child, legally
9adopted child, or child in the legal custody of police officers
10and fire officers killed or permanently disabled with 90% to
11100% disability in the line of duty while employed by, or in
12the voluntary service of, this State or any local public entity
13in this State. Beneficiaries need not be Illinois residents at
14the time of enrollment in order to receive this grant. With
15respect to disabled police and fire officers, natural children
16need not be born before the disability occurred in order to
17receive this grant. Beneficiaries are entitled to 8 semesters
18or 12 quarters of full payment of tuition and mandatory fees at
19any State-sponsored Illinois institution of higher learning
20for either full or part-time study, or the equivalent of 8
21semesters or 12 quarters of payment of tuition and mandatory
22fees at the rate established by the Commission for private
23institutions in the State of Illinois, provided the recipient

1is maintaining satisfactory academic progress. This benefit
2may be used for undergraduate or graduate study. The benefits
3of this Section shall be administered by and paid out of funds
4available to the Commission and shall accrue to the bona fide
5applicant without the requirement of demonstrating financial
6need to qualify for those benefits.

8    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
9becoming law.
