SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
New Act

    Creates the Veterans' Monument Protection Act. Prohibits any business or recyclable metal dealer, as defined in the Recyclable Metal Purchase Registration Law, to purchase, accept, or give anything of value in exchange for any metal taken from the grave marker of a veteran. Provides that a business or recyclable metal dealer who commits a violation of the Act is guilty of a business offense and shall be fined a maximum of $1,000 per grave marker. Provides that upon discovering that metal from the grave marker of a veteran is missing, a cemetery official shall notify the local law enforcement agency and, if possible, the family of the deceased veteran. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning business.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the
5Veterans' Monument Protection Act.
 
6    Section 5. Prohibited acts. It is a violation of this Act
7for any business or recyclable metal dealer, as defined in the
8Recyclable Metal Purchase Registration Law, to purchase,
9accept, or give anything of value in exchange for any metal
10taken from the grave marker of a veteran.
 
11    Section 10. Cemetery notification. Upon discovering that
12metal from the grave marker of a veteran is missing, a cemetery
13official shall notify the local law enforcement agency and, if
14possible, the family of the deceased veteran.
 
15    Section 15. Penalties. A business or recyclable metal
16dealer who commits a violation of this Act is guilty of a
17business offense and shall be fined a maximum of $1,000 per
18grave marker.
 
19    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
20becoming law.
