SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death
3for both men and women, and within every ethnic population, in
4Illinois, the United States and the world, this year killing
5more Americans than breast, prostate, and colon cancer
6combined; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In the United States in 2010, about 222,520 new
8cases of lung cancer are estimated to be diagnosed (116,750
9among men and 105,770 among women); and
 
10    WHEREAS, In the United States in 2010, there will be an
11estimated 157,300 deaths from lung cancer (86,220 among men and
1271,080 among women), accounting for about 27% of all cancer
13deaths; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2010, there will be an estimated
159,190 people who are diagnosed with lung cancer, and it is
16estimated that over 6,490 residents will succumb to the
17disease; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Lung cancer causes include smoking, secondhand
19smoke, exposure to toxins and known carcinogens, and genetic
20abnormalities; and

1    WHEREAS, 80% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed in people
2who have never smoked or who have quit smoking; and
 
3    WHEREAS, An estimated 90% of lung cancer deaths among men
4and approximately 80% of lung cancer deaths among women are
5attributed to smoking; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lung cancer has a poor prognosis; even with
7treatment, people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer have
8a 5-year survival rate of less than 5 percent; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Increased awareness and coordination among all
10stakeholders, including federal and state governments,
11providers, patient groups, community leaders and
12organizations, the public, businesses, and researchers, is
13critical to promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of
14lung cancer; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we proclaim the month
17of November 2010 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the State of
18Illinois.
