SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Samuel J. Van Scoyoc, Sr. of Bloomington,
4who passed away on July 3, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. was born March 4, 1939, in
6Kewanee; he was the son of Delmar Emery and Freda Marie Betar
7Van Scoyoc; he married Norma J. Lebre on October 10, 1964, in
8Dixon; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. served as a medic with the
10United States Army from 1961 to 1964; he served in Vietnam
11during his time with the Army; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. earned his bachelor's
13degree from Illinois State University, where he majored in
14special education and minored in elementary education; he was a
15member of the Black Friars and served as the sports editor for
16The Vidette while at ISU; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. had a long and
18distinguished career in numerous fields; he was employed in
19pharmaceutical sales with Parke Davis; he served as the
20marketing director at Bloomington Federal Savings and Loan,
21which was later called Champion Federal and First of America

1Bank, where he received the James H. Duncan Award for
2performance excellence; he served as the marketing director at
3The Pantagraph; he last worked in the marketing department at
4State Farm Bank; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. participated in many local
6civic activities, including the Jaycees, where he served as the
7president of the local chapter and had served as the national
8director for the State of Illinois; he also received the award
9of Jaycee International Senator; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. served as the treasurer for
11the McLean County Chapter of the American Heart Association for
1225 years; he served on the board of the McLean County United
13Way; he was a member and past president of the ISU Alumni Board
14and a current member of the ISU Foundation Board; he served on
15the McLean County Planning Commission; he served on the BroMenn
16Foundation Board; he also served as past president of Beyond
17the Books; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. was a strong supporter of
19BHS athletics; he was also a 25-year member of the chain gang
20at home football games; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. was preceded in death by
22his parents; his twin sister, Sally Aikens; and his sister,

1Susan Chiverton; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. is survived by his wife;
3his children, Samuel (Christy) Van Scoyoc Jr., Dr. John (Dr.
4Stacey) Van Scoyoc, Anna (James Damron) Van Scoyoc, and Sara
5(Tom) Simmons; his grandchildren, Samuel Van Scoyoc III, Megan
6Van Scoyoc, Peter Van Scoyoc, Jacob Van Scoyoc, Lucas Van
7Scoyoc, James Damron, and Joseph Damron; and his aunt, Olga
8Thingvold; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. will be remembered fondly
10by his family and friends for his sense of humor and hearty
11laugh, which will be missed by all who knew and loved him;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15his family and friends, the passing of Samuel J. Van Scoyoc,
16Sr.; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Samuel Van Scoyoc, Sr. as an
19expression of our sympathy.
