SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Richard J. Kelly of Oak Park, who passed
4 away on April 15, 2010; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Kelly was from the Southside of Chicago and
6 raised in the Beverly neighborhood; he was a graduate of St.
7 Ignatius High School and Notre Dame University; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He was the son of a salesman and a social worker,
9 and was inspired by the Reverend Andrew Greeley, assistant
10 pastor at Christ the King Parish in Beverly during the 1960s,
11 to become involved in the civil rights movement; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in
13 Marquette Park and was a community organizer on the West Side
14 of Chicago; he taught school in Hattiesburg, Mississippi during
15 "Freedom Summer" in 1964, as well as registering voters and
16 protesting; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He later taught in the Chicago public schools and
18 drove a taxi in the suburbs; he took time off from teaching to
19 work in the administration of former Illinois Governor Dan
20 Walker as a liaison to labor unions; and

1     WHEREAS, He was an active member of the St. Giles Community
2 in Oak Park and headed a social committee there for many years;
3 and
 
4     WHEREAS, Richard J. Kelly was the beloved husband of
5 Margaret E. Field; the loving father of Michael S. (Lucy Fox)
6 Kelly; and the stepfather of Jason (Jennifer Chhatlani) Rosado,
7 Megan (David Skach) Rosado, Jason (Julie) Foras, and Jennifer
8 (Brendon) Pollard; the cherished grandfather of Benjamin,
9 Isaac, and Alfred Kelly; the dear brother of Thomas Kelly, Jack
10 Kelly, Suzanne Kelly, and Michael (Meg) Kelly, and the late Jim
11 Kelly; the dear brother-in-law of Kathleen (Edward Ogata) Orr,
12 William (Mary Ann) Field, Laurie Rostholder, and Toddy Kelly;
13 and the fond uncle of Tom, Dan, Aileen, Josh, Rose, Alison, and
14 Molly; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
17 his family and friends, the passing of Richard J. Kelly; and be
18 it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the family of Richard Kelly as a symbol of our
21 sincere sympathy.
