SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of John Mendenhall Sr. of Godfrey, who
4 passed away on November 16, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, John Howard Mendenhall Sr. was born on October 27,
6 1918, in Chicago Heights, the son of John Franklin and Ethel
7 (Evans) Mendenhall; he married the former Alice L. Reid on June
8 20, 1942, in Chicago; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He received a B.S. in metallurgical engineering
10 from the University of Illinois; he was employed at Olin Brass
11 as a metallurgical engineer for more than 40 years, as a brass
12 alloys expert, retiring in 1985; and
 
13     WHEREAS, He was a member of the Community Congregational
14 UCC in Godfrey for many years and then transferred membership
15 to the Evangelical UCC in Godfrey, where he sang with his wife
16 in the choir; he was a member of the American Society for
17 Testing and Materials (ASTM), which he joined in 1961 and
18 became a fellow in their society; he loved to golf, was an avid
19 reader, worked as a volunteer at the Crisis Food Center for 20
20 years, and was a loyal Chicago White Sox fan; and
 
21     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents and one

1 son, Thomas John Mendenhall; and
 
2     WHEREAS, John Mendenhall Sr. is survived by his wife,
3 Alice; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jack Wepler;
4 his sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Stephanie Mendenhall
5 and John and Susan Mendenhall; his grandchildren, Travis and
6 Todd Zimmerman, Jeremy Wepler, Jessica and Christopher
7 Mendenhall, and Jacob and Alex Levering; his great-grandson,
8 Tristan Zimmerman; and his sisters and a brother-in-law,
9 Dorothy Peebles and Gladys and Robert Tuggle; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
12 his family and friends, the passing of John Mendenhall Sr.; and
13 be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to the family of John Mendenhall Sr. as a symbol of
16 our sincere sympathy.
