SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Sheldon J. Segal; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Sheldon Segal was a pioneer in the field of
5 contraceptives; he was the leader of the team that developed
6 the contraceptive implant Norplant and several other
7 birth-control devices used by millions of women worldwide; he
8 also helped create the Mirena intrauterine device,
9 copper-bearing IUDs, and contraceptive vaginal rings; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Sheldon Segal was a strong believer in a woman's
11 right to control her reproduction; he spent years persuading
12 the Chinese government to switch from ill-fitting steel IUDs to
13 flexible copper-bearing IUDs, a key improvement that also
14 reduced the demand for abortions in China; he also toured
15 numerous contraceptive clinics in Bangladesh during the 1970s
16 and worked with the Bangladeshi government to try to improve
17 the quality of IUD delivery; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Sheldon Segal served as an advisor to numerous
19 governmental and non-governmental organizations, including the
20 Population Council, the United States Congress, the World
21 Health Organization, the U.N. Population Fund, the World Bank,
22 and the European Parliament; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
3 his family and friends, the passing of Sheldon J. Segal; and be
4 it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to the family of Sheldon Segal as an expression of
7 our sympathy.
