SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Leon Shlofrock of Skokie, who passed away
4 on September 12, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, the son of a
6 Polish immigrant furrier; he was a graduate of Lincoln High
7 School in Brooklyn and took classes at the University of
8 Chicago and George Washington University; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He served in the United States Army during World
10 War II, fighting in France and was shot in battle; he was later
11 made an honorary colonel by former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar;
12 and
 
13     WHEREAS, After the war he became active in the labor
14 movement in New York City and was an officer in the Amalgamated
15 Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of America; in 1955 he came to
16 Chicago and held positions that included serving as a business
17 manager with a local of the Chicago Fur Workers Union, where he
18 retired in 1968; and
 
19     WHEREAS, He started what is now the Illinois Long Term Care
20 Council, representing more than 200 Illinois health-care
21 facilities today; he was the owner of Betcare Associates, a

1 family-owned company that owns long-term care facilities; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Mr. Shlofrock was the owner of numerous
3 thoroughbred horses and was a regular at horse tracks; he was
4 appointed to the Illinois Racing Board in 2000 by former
5 Illinois Governor George Ryan and stepped down in 2004; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Leon Shlofrock is survived by his wife, Jean; his
7 sons, John and Mike; his daughter, Elisa Zusman; and five
8 grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
10 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
11 his family and friends, the passing of Leon Shlofrock; and be
12 it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to the family of Leon Shlofrock as a symbol of our
15 sincere sympathy.
