2 | WHEREAS, The blond and statuesque Sybille Fritzsche, our | ||||||
3 | own Nordic goddess, was an iconic role model for Lab School | ||||||
4 | mothers during the years she graced our neighborhood; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Sybille's decision to go to law school as an adult | ||||||
6 | while her children were young served as a different and | ||||||
7 | possibly even finer role model for Hyde Park mothers; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, At the University of Chicago Law School she was | ||||||
9 | one of my husband's favorite students; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Sybille's work for the Illinois chapter of the | ||||||
11 | American Civil Liberties Union, from the late 1960s through | ||||||
12 | 1974 broke ground in the areas of reproductive rights, | ||||||
13 | religious liberty, free speech, gender discrimination, and | ||||||
14 | employment law; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Sybille, barely out of law school, served as lead | ||||||
16 | attorney in the case of Doe V. Scott, a pre-Roe v. Wade | ||||||
17 | decision which established that the federal right to privacy | ||||||
18 | protects a woman's right to choose abortion; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, She laid the legal groundwork for the successful | ||||||
20 | challenge to a Chicago public college preparatory school that |

1 | initally barred women from admission and, when the ban was | ||||||
2 | lifted, required successful women applicants to earn higher | ||||||
3 | scores than their male counterparts; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Sybille later served with distinction as | ||||||
5 | executive director of the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil | ||||||
6 | Rights under the Law; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Sybille's incisive mind and extraordinary | ||||||
8 | constitutional vision provided a strong intellectual framework | ||||||
9 | for her legal work on behalf of women, the poor, and racial | ||||||
10 | minorities; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Her friends and neighbors, as well as all the | ||||||
12 | people of Illinois, were sorry to lose her charm and her | ||||||
13 | talents when she and Hellmut moved to Arizona; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, This is the year Sybille celebrates her 80th | ||||||
15 | birthday; therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
17 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
18 | thank Sybille Fritzsche for her tireless work on behalf of | ||||||
19 | civil rights and civil liberties, that we send her joy on her | ||||||
20 | birthday, and that we wish her happy days in the years ahead; | ||||||
21 | and be it further
