2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Alene O. |
4 | | Fleming of Robbins, who passed away on December 24, 2010 at the |
5 | | age of 103; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, She was born on August 7, 1907 in Bolivar County, |
7 | | Mississippi to Ned and Lela Fleming; she attended First Baptist |
8 | | Church in Renova, Mississippi; she was baptized at the age of |
9 | | 12; she also had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing |
10 | | throughout her life; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in |
12 | | Renova; she attended high school in Tuskegee, where she studied |
13 | | nursing and proudly served Dr. George Washington Carver his |
14 | | breakfast each morning; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, She moved to Chicago in 1925; during World War II |
16 | | she worked at a defense plant where she was a seamstress; on |
17 | | September 22, 1926 she married Clarence Rochon; she moved to |
18 | | Robbins in 1957 and joined St. John Community Church, where she |
19 | | was a soloist in the Senior Choir, a member of the August
|
20 | | Birthday Club, and an active participant in the Willing Workers |
21 | | Club; and
|

1 | | WHEREAS, In the 1960s, she returned to school and completed |
2 | | her Child
Development Certificate at Moraine Valley Community |
3 | | College; she retired
from Robbins Head Start in the mid 70s; |
4 | | she was involved in local
politics, the Robbins Celebration |
5 | | League, and the PTA; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, In 1981, she relocated to The Woodlands, Texas to |
7 | | help with the rearing of her
grandsons; she was a member of St. |
8 | | Paul's Baptist Church
of the Woodlands; she returned to Robbins |
9 | | in 1997; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her siblings, |
11 | | Richard, Bessie, Ned, James, Perry, John Henry, Bertha, Ruth, |
12 | | Geraldine, and Carl; her son, Walter Collins (Floree); her |
13 | | granddaughter, Gwendolyn Boston; and her grandson, Mckinley |
14 | | "Mack" Collins; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Alene Fleming is survived by her sisters, Bernice |
16 | | Lee and Lyree Roberson (King); her sisters-in-law, Irma Fleming |
17 | | (James) and Lillian Fleming (Carl); her children, Harold |
18 | | Douglas Fleming (Jane) and Ava Blocker; her grandchildren, |
19 | | Walter Collins, Jr. (Gladys), Maurice Collins (Vivian), Ralph |
20 | | Collins, Rose Ikpelue (Mike), Melvin Collins, Anthony Collins |
21 | | (Joyce), Martin Amos (Angela), Erick Fleming, Derrick Fleming, |
22 | | Chantal Fleming, Joshua Fleming, Doyle Fleming (Rhoda), and |
23 | | Darren Fleming; her 39 great-grandchildren; her 33 |

2 | | her numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and |
3 | | friends; therefore, be it

4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
5 | | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
6 | | mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Alene |
7 | | Fleming; and be it further
|
8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
9 | | presented to the family of Alene Fleming as a symbol of our |
10 | | sincere sympathy.
