2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Alfred E. | ||||||
4 | Gallo, who passed away on August 16, 2010; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo began attending the John Marshall Law | ||||||
6 | School in 1940; his studies were interrupted, however, by the | ||||||
7 | onset of World War II; shortly after, he volunteered for the | ||||||
8 | Counterintelligence Corps of the United States Army and was | ||||||
9 | stationed in Africa and Italy; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, After World War II, Alfred Gallo returned to John | ||||||
11 | Marshall Law School; while in law school, he worked as a | ||||||
12 | clerk/typist at Liberty National Bank, where he was promoted to | ||||||
13 | assistant trust officer in 1948; in 1955, as the result of a | ||||||
14 | merger with Chicago National Bank, he became one of two | ||||||
15 | supervisors responsible for the trust department at LaSalle | ||||||
16 | Street Bank; in 1958, he became vice president and trust | ||||||
17 | officer of Cosmopolitan National Bank of Chicago, rising to the | ||||||
18 | position of president in 1971; in 1975, he became chief | ||||||
19 | operating officer and chairman of the board of United of | ||||||
20 | America Bank and O'Hare International Bank, which merged with | ||||||
21 | Northern Trust Bank; he was responsible for forming the Land | ||||||
22 | Trust Council of Illinois, which has a membership of over 100 | ||||||
23 | banks; he served as president of the trust division of the |

1 | Illinois Bankers Association; he was also appointed to serve as | ||||||
2 | director of a satellite bank of the holding company of the | ||||||
3 | Northern Trust; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo had a long and distinguished career | ||||||
5 | as a lawyer, serving for many years in private practice; in | ||||||
6 | 1960, he became president of the Justinian Society of Lawyers; | ||||||
7 | and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo was well known throughout his | ||||||
9 | community for his career involvement in the John Marshall Law | ||||||
10 | School; devoting himself greatly to the John Marshall goal of | ||||||
11 | giving as many people as possible the opportunity to become a | ||||||
12 | lawyer, he served on the school's governing board for more than | ||||||
13 | 30 years and was elected president of its prestigious board of | ||||||
14 | trustees in 2001; he served in that capacity until 2007; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The child of Italian immigrants, Alfred Gallo | ||||||
16 | consistently demonstrated his commitment to the preservation | ||||||
17 | of Sicilian and Italian culture; he was a driving force in the | ||||||
18 | creation of the Sicilian American Cultural Association and | ||||||
19 | served as the association's chairman; he was also the recipient | ||||||
20 | of the Star of Solidarity from the Republic of Italy for his | ||||||
21 | efforts in fostering artistic and cultural relations between | ||||||
22 | Italy and the United States; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo aided in the creation of an | ||||||
2 | Ecclesiastical Foundation with the guidance of
Albert Cardinal | ||||||
3 | Meyers and Monsignor Francis Dolan for the perpetuation of the | ||||||
4 | Queen of All Saints Basilica, the first of its kind in the | ||||||
5 | Catholic Church; he was also a former member of the board of | ||||||
6 | directors of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association and | ||||||
7 | a former member of the board of trustees of the Illinois | ||||||
8 | College of Pediatric Medicine; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo and his loving wife, Gina, lived on | ||||||
10 | Chicago's North Side, where he was active in many community | ||||||
11 | affairs and was a lector and ecumenical minister at St. William | ||||||
12 | Church; he was also a devotee and lecturer on the life and art | ||||||
13 | of Michelangelo and founder of the elite Oenophilists' Society | ||||||
14 | of Chicago; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
16 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
17 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Alfred | ||||||
18 | E. Gallo; and be it further
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the family of Alfred Gallo as an expression of our | ||||||
21 | sympathy.
