| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Lela A. Bridges on |
| 4 |
| the occasion of her retirement as the District 152 |
| 5 |
| Superintendent of Schools after 38 years of dedicated service |
| 6 |
| with the district; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Lela Bridges is a native of Mendenhall, |
| 8 |
| Mississippi; she earned her bachelor's degree from Tougaloo |
| 9 |
| College in Tougaloo, Mississippi and her master's degree and |
| 10 |
| doctorate at Northern Illinois University; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Lela Bridges is a 3rd generation educator; during |
| 12 |
| her years as an educator, she has served as a teacher, dean of |
| 13 |
| students, elementary and high school principal, and central |
| 14 |
| office administrator; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Lela Bridges served as the District 152 |
| 16 |
| Superintendent of Schools for 15 years; she is currently the |
| 17 |
| longest-sitting African-American female superintendent in the |
| 18 |
| State of Illinois; and
|
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, Lela Bridges has been the recipient of numerous |
| 20 |
| awards for her service in her community, including the South |
| 21 |
| Suburban YMCA outstanding community service award, the |
|
|

| Outstanding Business Woman of the Year award from the Iota Phi |
| 2 |
| Lambda Sorority in 2005, the Break The Mold Award from the |
| 3 |
| Illinois State Board of Education, the Dr. Norman LA Harry |
| 4 |
| Service Award from the Tougaloo College Alumni Association |
| 5 |
| Chicago Chapter, the Echoes of Excellence Award from the Delta |
| 6 |
| Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Joliet Alumnae Chapter, the |
| 7 |
| Educators Stakeholders Award from the Midwest National Council |
| 8 |
| on Educating Black Children, and an award from the National |
| 9 |
| Association of University Women's North Shore Illinois Branch; |
| 10 |
| in 2004, a street at 147th and Broadway in the City of Harvey |
| 11 |
| was named after her in honor of her many accomplishments; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Lela Bridges is a member of the Covenant United |
| 13 |
| Church of Christ, where she is a member of the Women's |
| 14 |
| Fellowship and Sunday school; she is also a member of the Alpha |
| 15 |
| Kappa Alpha Sorority and the North Shore Court #73 Heroine of |
| 16 |
| Jericho and Shawall Court #4 Daughters of Isis Prince Hall |
| 17 |
| Affiliates; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, Lela Bridges and her husband, John Webb, have 2 |
| 19 |
| daughters, Tiffanie and Stephanie, and a grandson, Jaden; |
| 20 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
