HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, People with disabilities represent an
3 ever-growing percentage of Illinois citizens who need
4 accessible parking spaces to ensure access to participate fully
5 in the various aspects of community life; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly is committed to
7 removing many of the major barriers to independence for people
8 with disabilities in Illinois by urging every community with a
9 population of more than 15,000 to conduct accessible parking
10 awareness days; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Great strides have been made in Illinois to make
12 buildings and facilities accessible to people with
13 disabilities and adequate accessible parking spaces must be
14 kept free from barriers such as debris and snow accumulation;
15 and
 
16     WHEREAS, All drivers, municipalities, and private parking
17 lot owners share the responsibility of knowing and adhering to
18 all laws regarding parking for persons with disabilities as
19 specified in the Illinois drivers manual and other statutes to
20 be kept updated in print and online; and
 
21     WHEREAS, All officials charged with parking enforcement

1 must be vigilant in ensuring proper access to accessible
2 parking spaces and reducing illegal use; therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5 urge the Governor to proclaim November as Illinois Accessible
6 Parking Awareness Month in the State of Illinois, and urge all
7 citizens to join in recognizing the importance of accessible
8 parking spaces and in committing ourselves to eliminating
9 barriers, physical and attitudinal, that stand in the way of
10 providing people with disabilities access to community
11 activities throughout our State; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That we urge the Illinois Secretary of State to
13 conduct accessible parking awareness days each year by
14 providing information to newspaper, radio, television, and by
15 any other means used in this State to communicate with the
16 public; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
18 presented to Governor Pat Quinn and Secretary of State Jesse
19 White.
