| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to honor Shawn Duresse Gibson for |
| 4 |
| her service to our nation in the United States Armed Forces and |
| 5 |
| congratulate her for being Illinois State Representative Eddie |
| 6 |
| Washington's Veteran of the Month; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Shawn Gibson was born on June 3, 1963, in |
| 8 |
| Waukegan; she graduated from North Chicago High School with the |
| 9 |
| class of 1981; during high school, she was very active in |
| 10 |
| sports and earned a letter in track and field; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Shawn Gibson joined the United States Army on |
| 12 |
| September 28, 1982; on January 25, 1983, she began basic |
| 13 |
| training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, where she was trained as |
| 14 |
| an Automated Logistics Specialist; on March 8, 1983, she |
| 15 |
| attended Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia, |
| 16 |
| where she graduated with honors in May of 1983; and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, Shawn Gibson served in numerous support units |
| 18 |
| throughout her service in the Army, including tours of duty in |
| 19 |
| posts throughout the United States, Germany, and Korea; she |
| 20 |
| also served with the United States Army Combined Arms Support |
| 21 |
| Command and volunteered to be a drill sergeant at Fort Knox, |
| 22 |
| Kentucky; at the time of her retirement in January of 2009, she |

| was serving as a First Sergeant with the 240th Quartermaster |
| 2 |
| Company in Bamberg, Germany; and
|
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, Shawn Gibson was the recipient of numerous awards |
| 4 |
| and decorations during her service in the Army, including the |
| 5 |
| Meritorious Service Medal with 2nd oak leaf cluster (OLC), the |
| 6 |
| Army Commendation Medal (5th OLC), the Army Achievement Medal |
| 7 |
| (5th OLC), 7 Army Good Conduct Medals, the Korean Defense |
| 8 |
| Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Global War |
| 9 |
| on Terrorism Service Medal, 3 NCO Professional Development |
| 10 |
| Ribbons, the Army Service Ribbon, 4 Overseas Service Ribbons, |
| 11 |
| and the Drill Sergeant Instructor Badge; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Shawn Gibson enjoys singing, playing softball and |
| 13 |
| volleyball, taking care of her fellow soldiers, and spending |
| 14 |
| time with her beautiful children, Devante' and Jaylen; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Shawn Gibson serves as a model of hard work, |
| 16 |
| integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of |
| 17 |
| Illinois; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 19 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 20 |
| honor Shawn Duresse Gibson for her service to our nation, |
| 21 |
| congratulate her for being Illinois State Representative Eddie |
| 22 |
| Washington's Veteran of the Month, and wish her continued |
