HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2
    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate the staff of the 
4
Gail Borden Library on winning the 2009 National Medal for 
5
Museum and Library Service; and
  
 
6
    WHEREAS, The Institute of Museum and Library Service has 
7
selected five museums and five libraries to receive the 2009 
8
National Medal for Museum and Library Service; the National 
9
Medal is the nation's highest honor for museums and libraries 
10
that make extraordinary civic, educational, economic, 
11
environmental, and social contributions; and
  
 
12
    WHEREAS, The Institute of Museum and Library Services is 
13
the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 
14
libraries and 17,500 museums; the Institute's mission is to 
15
create strong libraries and museums that connect people to 
16
information and ideas; and
  
 
17
    WHEREAS, The Gail Borden Public Library is the heart and 
18
hub of exciting activities in Elgin; its motto, "Learning is a 
19
Journey...Start It Here," has been the inspiration behind many 
20
activities, including the Dr. Torres Library Card Challenge, a 
21
month-long program that resulted in 8,000 new library cards for 
22
local kids; the "A Tapestry of Freedom" project, which

encouraged residents, especially foreign-born patrons, to 
2
share their stories of struggle and triumph with fellow Elgin 
3
citizens; and the GIANTS: African Dinosaurs and SPACE: Dare to 
4
Dream programs that brought to the library prehistoric visitors 
5
and objects from far-flung galaxies; and
  
 
  
6
    WHEREAS, In addition to the National Medal, which will be 
7
awarded in an upcoming Washington, D.C. ceremony, each 
8
institution receives a $10,000 award; therefore, be it
  
 
9
    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
10
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
11
congratulate the staff of the Gail Borden Library on this award 
12
and thank them for their work in the community; and be it 
13
further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
15
presented to the staff of the Gail Borden Library in Elgin as a 
16
symbol of our respect and esteem.
