HOUSE RESOLUTION


 
2
    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dean James Johnson 
4
of the College of Arts and Humanities at Eastern Illinois 
5
University, on being named The Daily Eastern News Person of the 
6
Year and on his upcoming retirement; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, He is a  1963 graduate of Emporia State University 
8
in Emporia, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art; 
9
he went on to receive his Master of Fine Arts degree from the 
10
University of Kansas in 1970; he spent nearly a decade teaching 
11
at the University of Kansas and Arkansas State University 
12
before making his way to Eastern Illinois University; and

 
13
    WHEREAS, He  spearheaded efforts to complete the Doudna Fine 
14
Arts Center, brought together several various departments to 
15
form the College of Arts and Humanities, and strived to make 
16
the College of Arts and Humanities a continued success; and

 
17
    WHEREAS, The College of Arts and Humanities is made up of 
18
Art, English, Foreign Languages, History, Journalism, Music, 
19
Philosophy, Speech Communication, and Theatre Arts; three 
20
study areas, African-American Studies, Social Science Studies, 
21
and Womens Studies Minor; and the Tarble Arts Center; and

    WHEREAS, His responsibilities as Dean include 
2
administration of the College of Arts and Humanities budget, 
3
supervision of approximately 228 faculty members, 24 civil 
4
service staff members, and 14 administrative positions; in 
5
addition his office is responsible for several other important 
6
areas of the college, including certification of all majors for 
7
graduation; and

 
8
    WHEREAS, Dean Johnson will be retiring in June of 2009 and 
9
will spend time with his family, his wife, Wanda, his three 
10
sons, Kirby, Brent, and Tyler, and his daughter-in-law, 
11
Bridget; therefore, be it

 
12
    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
13
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
14
congratulate Dean Johnson on being named The Daily Eastern 
15
Daily News Person of the Year, his retirement, and wish him all 
16
the best in all his future endeavors; and be it further

 
17
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
18
presented to Dean James Johnson as a symbol of our respect and 
19
esteem.
