HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 17

 
2     WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Illinois
3 recognizes that Alzheimer's disease is the 21st century's
4 health epidemic; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Illinois
6 recognizes that 10 million baby boomers in the United States
7 will develop Alzheimer's disease; and
 
8     WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Illinois
9 recognizes that one in 8 baby boomers in America will develop
10 Alzheimer's; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Illinois
12 recognizes that Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause
13 of death in the United States; and
 
14     WHEREAS, As a result of federally funded Alzheimer
15 research, treatments to delay, halt, or reverse the progression
16 of Alzheimer's disease are within reach; and
 
17     WHEREAS, New Alzheimer treatments would save millions of
18 baby boomers from Alzheimer's disease and yield $60 billion in
19 annual Medicare and Medicaid savings within 5 years after a
20 breakthrough; and

1     WHEREAS, Federal funding to pursue Alzheimer research has
2 remained level for the past 4 years; therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
5 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge the members of the
6 Illinois delegation to the United States Congress to increase
7 fiscal year 2010 funding for Alzheimer research at the National
8 Institutes of Health by $125 million to find treatments to
9 delay or reverse the progression of Alzheimer's disease; and be
10 it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be sent
12 to each member of the Illinois Congressional delegation.
